Future aerospace ground test facility requirements for the Arnold Engineering Development Center

Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) was conceived at the close of World War II, when major new developments in flight technology were presaged by new aerodynamic and propulsion concepts. During the past 40 years, AEDC has played a significant part in the development of many aerospace systems. The original plans were extended through the years by some additional facilities, particularly in the area of propulsion testing. AEDC now has undertaken development of a master plan in an attempt to project requirements and to plan for ground test and computational facilities over the coming 20 to 30 years. This report was prepared in response to an AEDC request that the National Research Council (NRC) assemble a committee to prepare guidance for planning and modernizing AEDC facilities for the development and testing of future classes of aerospace systems as envisaged by the U.S. Air Force.

Embedded adaptation for time dependent real fluid/gas flows

An embedded adaptation algorithm is used to illustrate applications and requirements for Navier-Stokes and nonequilibrium unsteady two-dimensional flow fields. Both grid refinement and equation modification are included for unstructured distributions of quadrilateral cells. Multiple refinement parameters for distinct physical phenomena serve to monitor the evolving nonuniform field and to recognize flow features in isolated and overlapping subdomains. Examples from subsonic, hypersonic, internal, and external fields show substantial advantages for the adaptive approach.

Temporal and spatial adaptive algorithm for reacting flows

A numerical integration scheme for quasi-one-dimensional unsteady flows with finite-rate chemistry is developed and demonstrated. The governing Euler and species-conservation equations are derived; the integration method and the spatial and temporal grid embedding techniques are explained; and results for sample problems involving stream-tube flow with one dissociating gas, shock-tube flow with one dissociating gas, and diverging-channel flow with multiple reactions are presented in extensive graphs and briefly characterized. Accuracy comparable to that of globally fine grid solutions is obtained with significant savings in CPU time.

Spatio-temporal adaptation algorithm for two-dimensional reacting flows

A spatio-temporal adaptive algorithm for solving the unsteady Euler equations with chemical source terms is presented. Quadrilateral cells are used in two spatial dimensions which allow for embedded meshes tracking moving flow features with spatially varying time-steps which are multiples of global minimum time-steps. Blast wave interactions corresponding to a perfect gas (frozen) and a Lighthill dissociating gas (nonequilibrium) are considered for circular arc cascade and 90 degree bend duct geometries.
