Venturing Past Uranium: Synthesis of a Np(IV) Polyoxomolybdate–Alkoxide Sandwich Complex

The synthesis of a Np(IV) polyoxomolybdate– alkoxide sandwich complex, (TBA) 2 [Np{Mo 5 O 13 (OMe) 4 NO} 2 ] (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), is reported. This compound represents a rare example of a neptunium polyoxometalate cluster isolated outside of water, allowing for characterization of its electrochemical properties in nonaqueous solvents. Complexation of An(IV) cations fine-tunes the redox properties of the cluster, with the observed four reversible reductive events varying slightly both in potential and peak separation depending on the actinide present. The new Np(IV) complex also shows an irreversible event assigned to oxidation of Np(IV) to Np(V). New methodology for facile 17 O enrichment of (TBA) 2 [Mo 5 O 13 (OMe) 4 NO][Na(MeOH)] is presented, which provides a simple pathway to 17 O enriched analogues of the sandwich complexes discussed (Zr(IV), Hf(IV), Th(IV), U(IV), U(V), Np(IV)). 17 O NMR spectroscopy subsequently provides insights into both the nature of metal–oxygen bonding, as well as the influence of unpaired f-electrons on the local environment of the oxygen nuclei.

Breaking Barriers in Chalcogenide Perovskite Synthesis: A Generalized Framework for Fabrication of BaMS 3 (M═Ti, Zr, Hf) Materials

Abstract Chalcogenide perovskites have garnered increasing attention as stable, non‐toxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites. However, their conventional synthesis at high temperatures (>1000 °C) has hindered widespread adoption. Recent studies have developed low‐to‐moderate temperature synthesis methods (<600 °C) using reactive precursors, yet a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal factors affecting reproducibility and repeatability remains elusive. This study delineates the critical factors in the low‐temperature synthesis of BaMS 3 (M═Zr, Hf, Ti) compounds and presents a generalized framework. Innovative approaches are developed for synthesizing BaMS 3 compounds using this framework involving organometallics for solution deposition. The molecular precursor routes, employing metal acetylacetonates to generate soluble metal–sulfur bonded complexes and metal–organic compounds to produce soluble metal‐thiolate, metal‐isothiocyanate, and metal‐trithiocarbonate species, are demonstrated to yield carbon‐free BaMS 3 . These methods have achieved the most contiguous films of BaZrS 3 and BaHfS 3 using solution deposition to date. Furthermore, a hybrid solution processing method involving stacking sputter‐deposited Zr and solution‐deposited BaS layers is employed to synthesize a contiguous, oxygen‐free BaZrS 3 film. The diffuse reflectance measurements indicate a direct bandgap of ≈ 1.85 eV for the BaZrS 3 films and ≈ 2.1 eV for the BaHfS 3 film under investigation.

Multi‐electron Oxidation of Ce(III) Complexes Facilitated by Redox‐Active Ligands

A family of cerium complexes featuring a redox-active ligand in different oxidation states has been synthesized, including the the iminosemiquinone (isq) 1− compound, Ce( dipp isq) 3 (1-Ceisq), and the amidophenolate (ap) 2− species Ce III ( dipp ap) 3 K 3 (2-Ceap), [Ce III ( dipp ap) 3 K][K(18-c-6)] 2 (2-Ceap 18c6), and [Ce III ( dipp ap) 3 K][K(15-c-5) 2 ] 2 (2-Ceap 15c5). Treating 2-Ceap 15c5 with dioxogen furnishes the cerium(IV) derivative [Ce IV ( dipp ap) 3 ][K(15-c-5) 2 ] 2 (3-Ceap 15c5), and an analogous synthesis can be used to generate [Ce IV ( dipp ap) 3 ][K(crypt)] 2 (3-Ceap crypt). Similarly, addition of hexamethyldisiloxane produces an interesting bis(amidophenolate) species, [(Me 3 SiO) 2 Ce IV ( dipp ap) 2 ][K(15-c-5) 2 ] 2 (4-CeOSiMe 3 ). In conclusion, full spectroscopic and structural characterization of each derivative was performed to establish the oxidation states of both the ligands and the cerium ions.

Synthesis of Non-Aqueous Neptunium(III) Halide Solvates from NpO 2

We report two Np(III) halides, NpI 3 (THF) 4 and NpBr 3 (THF) 4 , have been prepared and isolated in high yields as described in this work. Starting with neptunia (NpO 2 ), NpCl 4 (DME) 2 was first generated in an updated, higher yielding synthesis than what was previously reported by using HCl/HF. This material was then reduced with KC 8 , followed by subsequent ligand exchange, to generate NpBr 3 (THF) 4 and NpI 3 -(THF) 4 . Full characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, 1 H NMR spectroscopy and electronic absorption spectroscopy confirmed the molecular formulas and oxidation states. These trivalent materials are straightforward to synthesize and can be used as starting materials for non-aqueous Np(III) chemistry, obviating the need for rare and restricted Np metal and elemental halogens.

Ligand effects on electronic structure and bonding in U(iii) coordination complexes: a combined MCD, EPR and computational study

The trivalent oxidation state of uranium has been shown to undergo unique reactivity, from its ability to activate a variety of small molecules to its role in the catalytic reduction of ethene to ethane amongst others. Central to this unique reactivity and ability to rationally design ligands for isotope separation is the underlying uranium electronic structure. While electronic structure studies of U(IV), U(V), and U(VI) have been extensive, by comparison, analogous studies of more reduced oxidation states such as U(III) remains underdeveloped. Herein we report a combined MCD and EPR spectroscopic approach along with density functional theory and multireference wavefunction calculations to elucidate the effects of ligand perturbation in three uranium(III) Tp* complexes. Overall, the experimental and computational insight suggests that the change in ligand environment across this series of U(III) complexes resulted in only minor perturbations in the uranium electronic structure. This combined approach was also used to redefine the electronic ground state of a U(III) complex with a redox non-innocent Bipy - ligand. Overall, these studies demonstrate the efficacy of the combined experimental and theoretical approach towards evaluating electronic structure and bonding in U(III) complexes and provide important insight into the challenges in altering ligand environments to modify bonding and reactivity in uranium coordination chemistry.

Evidence of Alpha Radiolysis in the Formation of a Californium Nitrate Complex

Well-characterized complexes of transplutonium elements are scarce because of the experimental challenges of working with these elements and the rarity of the isotopes. This leads to a lack of structural and spectroscopic data needed to understand the nature of chemical bonds in these compounds. In this work, the synthesis of Cf(DOPO q ) 2 (NO 3 )(py) (DOPO q =2,4,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-1-oxo-1H-phenoxazin-9-olate; py=pyridine) is reported, in which the nitrate anion is hypothesized to form through the α-radiolysis-induced reaction of pyridine and/or the ligand. Here, computational analysis of the electronic structure of the complex reveals that the Cf III –ligand interactions are largely ionic.
