Europa Clipper: MBSE Proving Ground

Recent collaborations between JPL’s Integrated Model Centric Engineering (IMCE) initiative and the Europa Clipper project have produced six distinct applications of MBSE. Most, but not all, of these have been successful. Here we describe all of the applications including benefits, challenges, and lessons learned.

Europa Clipper Mission: Onward to Implementation!

Europa, the fourth largest moon of Jupiter, is believed to be one of the best places in the solar system to look for extant life beyond Earth, and the Europa Clipper Mission is preparing to investigate. Now entering the fifth year of life as a formal project, the Europa Clipper Mission has completed its major design phase and is preparing for implementation. The mission envisions sending a flight system, consisting of a spacecraft equipped with a payload of NASA-selected scientific instruments, to execute numerous flybys of Europa while in Jupiter orbit. The mission is being formulated and implemented by a joint Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Project team. At the Project Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in August 2018, it was determined that the unique integration of the REASON instrument’s antennas with the spacecraft’s solar arrays required additional time for maturity and review. The required maturity was demonstrated, and in June 2019 the Clipper Mission passed its Delta Preliminary Design Review, and formal confirmation for entry into Phase C was announced by NASA in August 2019. The earliest launch opportunity is now in July 2023, one year later than originally planned. The Project is now working toward its Critical Design Review in May 2020. This paper will describe the progress of the Europa Clipper Mission since January 2019, including maturation of the spacecraft, subsystem and instrument designs, the beginning of fabrication of engineering models and the first flight models, planning for the verification & validation phase, and planning for operations.

Is MBSE Helping? Measuring Value on Europa Clipper

JPL’s Integrated Model Centric Engineering Initiative (IMCE) has led the infusion of MBSE at JPL. In 2009 I authored for IMCE a set of challenges that confronted systems engineering at JPL, based on examination of issues and lessons from several recent projects (the “Five System Engineering Challenges”). In 2012 I augmented this work to describe specific areas where it appeared MBSE could help address these challenges. Around the same time, the Europa Clipper Mission became the first project at JPL to attempt, in close collaboration with IMCE, a widespread adoption of MBSE. This adoption has been highly successful so far. Europa Clipper completed Phase A (Formulation) with a successful System Requirements Review / Mission Definition Review, and is nearing the end of Phase B, with a successful Flight System Preliminary Design Review in October 2017. This is an opportune time to take stock of the progress and the work yet to go. This paper proposes a practical method for measuring value added through use of MBSE, applies this method to the Europa Clipper Project, and suggests how it might be applied to other projects and organizations.

Europa Clipper Proposed Mission - an Update

Europa, the fourth largest moon of Jupiter, is believed to be one of the best places in the solar system to look for extant life beyond Earth. The 2011 Planetary Decadal Survey, Vision and Voyages, states: “Because of this ocean’s potential suitability for life, Europa is one of the most important targets in all of planetary science.” Exploring Europa to investigate its habitability is the goal of the planned Europa Mission. This exploration is intimately tied to understanding the three “ingredients” for life: liquid water, chemistry, and energy. The Europa Mission would investigate these ingredients by comprehensively exploring Europa’s ice shell and liquid ocean interface, surface geology and surface composition to glean insight into the inner workings of this fascinating moon. In addition, a lander mission is seen as a possible future step, but current data about the Jovian radiation environment and about potential landing site hazards and potential safe landing zones is insufficient. Therefore an additional goal of the mission would be to characterize the radiation environment near Europa and investigate scientifically compelling sites for hazards, to inform a potential future landed mission.

Early Formulation Model-centric Engineering on NASA's Europa Mission Concept Study

The proposed Jupiter Europa Orbiter and Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter missions were formulated using current state-of-the-art MBSE facilities: - JPL's TeamX, Rapid Mission Architecting - ESA's Concurrent Design Facility - APL's ACE Concurrent Engineering Facility. When JEO became an official "pre-project" in Sep 2010, we had already developed a strong partnership with JPL's Integrated Model Centric Engineering (IMCE) initiative; decided to apply Architecting and SysML-based MBSE from the beginning, begun laying these foundations to support work in Phase A. Release of Planetary Science Decadal Survey and FY12 President's Budget in March 2011 changed the landscape. JEO reverted to being a pre-phase A study. A conscious choice was made to continue application of MBSE on the Europa Study, refocused for early formulation. This presentation describes the approach, results, and lessons.
