Novel Photon-Counting Detectors for Free-Space Communication

We present performance data for novel photon-counting detectors for free space optical communication. NASA GSFC is testing the performance of two types of novel photon-counting detectors 1) a 2x8 mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe) avalanche array made by DRS Inc., and a 2) a commercial 2880-element silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) array. We present and compare dark count, photon-detection efficiency, wavelength response and communication performance data for these detectors. We successfully measured real-time communication performance using both the 2 detected-photon threshold and AND-gate coincidence methods. Use of these methods allows mitigation of dark count, after-pulsing and background noise effects. The HgCdTe APD array routinely demonstrated photon detection efficiencies of greater than 50% across 5 arrays, with one array reaching a maximum PDE of 70%. We performed high-resolution pixel-surface spot scans and measured the junction diameters of its diodes. We found that decreasing the junction diameter from 31 micrometers to 25 micrometers doubled the e- APD gain from 470 for an array produced in the year 2010 to a gain of 1100 on an array delivered to NASA GSFC recently. The mean single-photon SNR was over 12 and the excess noise factors measurements were 1.2-1.3. The commercial silicon APD array exhibited a fast output with rise times of 300 ps and pulse widths of 600 ps. On-chip individually filtered signals from the entire array were multiplexed onto a single fast output.

Development of Time-Distance Helioseismology Data Analysis Pipeline for SDO/HMI

The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager of SDO will provide uninterrupted 4k x 4k-pixel Doppler-shift images of the Sun with approximately 40 sec cadence. These data will have a unique potential for advancing local helioseismic diagnostics of the Sun's interior structure and dynamics. They will help to understand the basic mechanisms of solar activity and develop predictive capabilities for NASA's Living with a Star program. Because of the tremendous amount of data the HMI team is developing a data analysis pipeline, which will provide maps of subsurface flows and sound-speed distributions inferred form the Doppler data by the time-distance technique. We discuss the development plan, methods, and algorithms, and present the status of the pipeline, testing results and examples of the data products.

Development of an Integrated Rocket Thrust Chamber Assembly Analysis and Design Toolkit (TCAT)

There are many individual computational tools and methods used to analyze and design components of a rocket engine thrust chamber assembly (TCA) 11,21. To analyze and design a thrust chamber assembly these tools are usually used in sequence while communication of information between these tools is usually done manually. Each component of a TCA is usually designed and optimized individually with limited considerations on system optimized design. This approach is often iterative and can be prone to error. Also at present, expert knowledge of each tool is required. The objective of this software development effort is to select, integrate and automate the best tools into an easy-to-use computational package, the Thrust Chamber Analysis Toolkit (TCAT). This tool will provide a seamless process to analyze and design all or individual components of a thrust chamber assembly. This paper describes the current status of the MAT software development. The selected component codes and their capabilities are briefly described. User and module interfaces and integration status are presented. MAT pre- and post-processing added options are presented and overall MAT capabilities are demonstrated with the results of sample cases. Ongoing and planned model validation efforts are also described. Finally, the MAT future plan options are discussed.
