Lifetime measurements in 206 Po with a shell-model interpretation

The lifetimes of the first excited 2⁺ and 4⁺ states in 206 Po were measured using the recoil-distance Dopplershift method. The experimental results were compared to large-scale shell-model calculations that describe the deduced transition probabilities well. Those calculations were extended to the neighboring 204,208 Po isotopes giving a good overall description of the yrast states. However, the calculations underpredict the energies of the 6+1 and 8+1 states, which suggests that further improvement of the proton-neutron interaction is required.

Development of the multi-purpose Cologne Compact Differential Plunger (CoCoDiff) for the measurement of nuclear level lifetimes with the Recoil Distance Doppler-shift method

Here, a new 3-foil plunger device, the Cologne Compact Differential (CoCoDiff) plunger has been built and commissioned. Due to its compact size, it can be used together with many different spectrometers and auxiliary detectors. As a commissioning experiment, level lifetimes of the $2^{+}_{1}$ and the $4^{+}_{1}$ excited states of 50 Cr have been measured, using the Differential Decay Curve method (DDCM). A derivation is given on how this method can be applied to a differential plunger measurement, in order to measure distances for lifetimes from two different regions of sensitivity at the same time. The commissioning experiment took place at the Cologne FN tandem accelerator, using the reaction 24 Mg( 32 S,4p2n) 50 Cr. Lifetimes, deduced from this measurement, agree well with literature values from earlier measurements.

Complete set of bound negative-parity states in the neutron-rich nucleus 18 N

High-resolution γ -ray spectroscopy of N 18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O 18 beam on a Ta 181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N 18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 0 1 - and 1 2 - excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N 16 and N 18 , for the first time. Overall, understanding the N 18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Triaxiality in the mid-shell nucleus 112 Pd

In this work, lifetimes of low-spin excited states in 112 Pd were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique. The nucleus of interest was populated in a 110 Pd( 18 O, 16 O) 112 Pd reaction using the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Three lifetimes of ground-state band members and one lifetime of the γ band were measured. From these lifetimes reduced transition probabilities were extracted and compared to interacting boson model, γ-soft calculations, and Davydov calculations. The lifetime of the $2_{γ}^{+}$ gives some insights on the nuclear shape and structure of the γ band. The deduced transition rates show an indicator for a rigid triaxial nucleus as well as more indicators for a γ-soft nucleus.

Accessing tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds nuclear state lifetimes with low-energy binary heavy-ion reactions

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened γ-ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the 18 O(7.0MeV/u)+ 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in 17 O and 19 O, with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the ~20-400fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by γ-tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Evolution of collectivity in 118 Xe

A recoil-distance Doppler shift experiment has been performed using the Pd 102 ( F 19 , p 2 n ) reaction at a beam energy of 73 MeV to measure the lifetime of excited states in Xe 118 . Additionally, the differential decay-curve method using γ γ coincidences and a gating procedure that allows to extract the lifetime without feeding assumptions has been employed. The lifetimes obtained for the yrast states up to spin-parity 8 + are compared with interacting boson model calculations and Xe 118 can be classified as a transitional nucleus between the spherical and a deformed shape. Systematics of the B ( E 2 ) values for the 2 + → 0 + and 4 + → 2 + transitions in the isotopic chains of tin, tellurium and xenon are presented. It is proposed that a “critical point” exists at which the B ( E 2 ; 4 + → 2 + ) / B ( E 2 ; 2 + → 0 + ) ratio drops to unity for lower neutron numbers within the isotopic chain. The position of the “critical point” varies with proton number, i.e., it is presumed to be located at the same mass number A = 114 in the Sn, Te, and Xe isotopes.

Lifetime measurements of excited states in neutron-rich 53 Ti: Benchmarking effective shell-model interactions

Level lifetimes of the yrast (5/2 - ) to 13/2 - states in the neutron-rich nucleus 53 Ti, produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction, have been measured for the first time. The recoil distance Doppler-shift method was employed and lifetimes of the excited states were extracted by a lineshape analysis aided by GEANT4-based Monte-Carlo simulations. The experiment was performed at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds facility in Caen, France, by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array for the gamma-ray detection coupled to the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification and the Cologne plunger for deep-inelastic reactions. Reduced transition probabilities, deduced from the lifetimes, give new information on the nuclear structure of 53 Ti, and are used to benchmark different shell-model calculations using established interactions in the fp shell.
