XNsim: Internet-Enabled Collaborative Distributed Simulation via an Extensible Network

In this paper, the XNsim approach to achieve Internet-enabled, dynamically scalable collaborative distributed simulation capabilities is presented. With this approach, a complete simulation can be assembled from shared component subsystems written in different formats, that run on different computing platforms, with different sampling rates, in different geographic locations, and over singlelmultiple networks. The subsystems interact securely with each other via the Internet. Furthermore, the simulation topology can be dynamically modified. The distributed simulation uses a combination of hub-and-spoke and peer-topeer network topology. A proof-of-concept demonstrator is also presented. The XNsim demonstrator can be accessed at http://www.jsc.draver.corn/xn that hosts various examples of Internet enabled simulations.

Space Station Attitude Control During Payload Operations

Evaluating the feasibility of planned robotic operations requires an analysis methodology and tools that can quickly assess proposed attitude control strategies. In this paper, an efficient approach to model the attitude dynamics of the Space Station during payload motion is presented. This approach is used to formulate an alternative numerical solution for torque equilibrium attitudes including the effect of payload velocity. It is also shown that a judicious choice of attitude command during robotic operations can substantially reduce peak attitude control momentum use.

Fault tolerant kinematic control of hyper-redundant manipulators

Hyper-redundant spatial manipulators possess fault-tolerant features because of their redundant structure. The kinematic control of these manipulators is investigated with special emphasis on fault-tolerant control. The manipulator tasks are viewed in the end-effector space while actuator commands are in joint-space, requiring an inverse kinematic algorithm to generate joint-angle commands from the end-effector ones. The rate-inverse kinematic control algorithm presented in this paper utilizes the pseudoinverse to accommodate for joint motor failures. An optimal scale factor for the robust inverse is derived.

Steering law design for redundant single-gimbal control moment gyroscopes

Two steering laws are presented for single-gimbal control moment gyroscopes. An approach using the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse with a nondirectional null-motion algorithm is shown by example to avoid internal singularities for unidirectional torque commands, for which existing algorithms fail. Because this is still a tangent-based approach, however, singularity avoidance cannot be guaranteed. The singularity robust inverse is introduced as an alternative to the pseudoinverse for computing torque-producing gimbal rates near singular states. This approach, coupled with the nondirectional null algorithm, is shown by example to provide better steering law performance by allowing torque errors to be produced in the vicinity of singular states.

Redundant single gimbal control moment gyroscope singularity analysis

The robotic manipulator is proposed as the mechanical analog to single gimbal control moment gyroscope systems, and it is shown that both systems share similar difficulties with singular configurations. This analogy is used to group gimbal angles corresponding to any momentum state into different families. The singularity problem associated with these systems is examined in detail. In particular, a method is presented to test for the possibility of nontorque-producing gimbal motion at a singular configuration, as well as to determine the admissible motions in the case when this is possible. Sufficient conditions are derived for instances where the singular system can be reconfigured into a nonsingular state by these nontorque-producing motions.

Classification of singular configurations for redundant manipulators

A general methodology is presented for the singularity analysis of kinematically redundant manipulators. The singular configurations are classified based on the possibility of reconfiguration into a nonsingular posture using self-motion. A procedure is presented to test for the possibility of self-motion at a singular configuration. Necessary and sufficient conditions for admissible tangent vectors at the singular configuration are presented, as well as a method to construct such vectors. Sufficient conditions are derived for instances when the singular system can be reconfigured into a nonsingular state by displacements along the admissible null vectors.
