Measurement of prompt D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ production in p Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt D + and $D^+_s$ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{^{S}NN}$ = 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (1.58 ± 0.02)nb –1 is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using D + and $D^+_s$ candidates with transverse momentum in the range of 0 < p T < 14 GeV/c and rapidities in the ranges of 1.5 < y* < 4.0 and –5.0 < y* < –2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between D + , $D^+_s$ and D 0 mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.

Measurement of C P Violation in B 0 → ψ ( → ℓ + ℓ − ) K S 0 ( → π + π − ) Decays

A measurement of time-dependent C P violation in the decays of B 0 and B ¯ 0 mesons to the final states J / ψ ( → μ + μ − ) K S 0 , ψ ( 2 S ) ( → μ + μ − ) K S 0 and J / ψ ( → e + e − ) K S 0 with K S 0 → π + π − is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The C P -violation parameters are measured to be S ψ K S 0 = 0.717 ± 0.013 ( stat ) ± 0.008 ( syst ) and C ψ K S 0 = 0.008 ± 0.012 ( stat ) ± 0.003 ( syst ) . This measurement of S ψ K S 0 represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle β to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the C P -violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Measurement of CP asymmetries and branching fraction ratios of B – decays to two charm mesons

The CP asymmetries of seven B – decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a D *0 or ${D}_s^{\ast -}$ meson are analysed by reconstructing only the D 0 or ${D}_s^{-}$ decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}$ CP (B – → ${D}_s^{\ast -}$ D 0 ) and $\mathcal{A}$ CP (B – → ${D}_s^{-}$D $\ast$0 ), and the most precise measurement of the other five CP asymmetries. There is no evidence of CP violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured.

Study of the Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign pions in proton-lead collisions

Correlations of same-sign charged pions are analysed using proton-lead collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.06 nb -1 . Bose-Einstein correlations are observed in the form of an enhancement of pair production for same-sign charged pions with a small four-momentum difference. The dependence of the correlation radius and the intercept parameter on the reconstructed charged-particle multiplicity is investigated. The measured correlation radii scale linearly with the cube root of the reconstructed charged-particle multiplicity, being compatible with predictions of hydrodynamic models on the collision system evolution.

Evidence of a $J/$$\psi$$K_S^0$ Structure in $B^0$ → $J/$$\psi$$\phi$$K_S^0$

An amplitude analysis of $B^0$ → $J/$$\psi$$\phi$$K_S^0$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Evidence with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations of a structure in the $J/$$\psi$$K_S^0$ system, named $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) 0 , is seen, with its mass and width measured to be 3991$_{–10 –17}^{+12 +9}$ MeV/⁢c 2 and 105$_{–25 –23}^{+29 +17}$ MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) 0 state is likely to be the isospin partner of the $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) + state, previously observed in the $J/ψK^+$ system of the $B^+$→$J/ψ$$\phi$$K^+$ decay. When isospin symmetry for the charged and neutral $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) states is assumed, the signal significance increases to 5.4 standard deviations.

Search for CP violation in the phase space of D 0 → π⁻π⁺π 0 decays with the energy test

A search for CP violation in D 0 → π - π + π 0 decays is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . An unbinned model-independent approach provides sensitivity to local CP violation within the two-dimensional phase space of the decay. The method is validated using the Cabibbo-favoured channel D 0 → K - π + π 0 and background regions of the signal mode. The results are consistent with CP symmetry in this decay.

Measurement of the Ratios of Branching Fractions R ( D * ) and R ( D 0 )

The ratios of branching fractions $R(D*)$ ≡ $B(\overline{B} → D*τ^-\overline{ν}_μ$)/$B$($\overline{B}$ → $D*μ^-\overline{ν}_μ$) and $R$($D$ 0 ) ≡ $B$($B$ - → $D^0τ^-\overline{v}_τ$)/$B$($B$ - → $D^0μ^-\overline{v}_μ$) are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb -1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode $τ^-$ → $μ^-ν_τ\overline{ν}_μ$. The measured values are $R$($D$*) = 0.281 ± 0.018 ± 0.024 and $R$($D$ 0 ) = 0.441 ± 0.060 ± 0.066, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is $ρ$ = -0.43. The results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the standard model.

Search for the rare decays $W^+ → D^+_s \gamma$ and $Z → D^0 \gamma$ at LHCb

A search for the rare decays $W^+ → D^+_s \gamma$ and $Z → D^0 \gamma$ is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0fb -1 . No significant signal is observed for either decay mode and upper limits on their branching fractions are set using W⁺ → μ⁺v and Z → μ⁺μ⁻ decays as normalization channels. The upper limits are 6.5 x 10 -4 and 2.1 x 10 -3 at 95% confidence level for the $W^+ → D^+_s \gamma$ and $Z → D^0 \gamma$ decay modes, respectively. This is the first reported search for the $Z → D^0 \gamma$ decay, while the upper limit on the branching fraction $W^+ → D^+_s \gamma$ improves upon the previous best limit.

Measurement of the Branching Fractions $\mathcal{B}(B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$

Searches for the rare hadronic decays $B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ and $B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . Significances of 9.3⁢σ and 4.0⁢σ, including statistical and systematic uncertainties, are obtained for the $B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ and $B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ signals, respectively. The branching fractions are measured relative to the topologically similar normalization decays B 0 → J/ψ⁢(→ $p\bar{p}$)⁢K* 0 ⁡(→ K + ⁡π – ) and B$^0_s$→J/ψ⁢(→ $p\bar{p}$) $\phi$(→K + ⁢K – ). The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$ = (2.2 ± 0.4 ± 0.1 ± 0.1)×10 –8 and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$ = (2.3 ± 1.0 ± 0.2 ± 0.1)×10 –8 . In these measurements, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third one is due to the external branching fraction of the normalization channel.

Associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and Υ mesons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is studied using LHCb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4 fb -1 . The measurement is performed for J/ψ (Υ) mesons with a transverse momentum p T < 10 (30) GeV/c in the rapidity range 2.0 < y < 4.5. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ(1S) mesons is measured to be 133 ± 22 ± 7 ± 3 pb, with a signifcance of 7.9 σ, and that of prompt J/ψ and Υ(2S) mesons to be 76 ± 21 ± 4 ± 7 pb, with a signifcance of 4.9 σ. The frst uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the frst observation of the associated production of J/ψ and Υ(1S) in proton-proton collisions. Diferential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the J/ψ and Υ(1S) mesons. The efective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

Study of charmonium decays to K S 0 K π in the B → ( K S 0 K π ) K channels

A study of the B + → $K^0_S$K + K - π + and B + → $K^0_S$K + K + π - decays is performed using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV at the LHCb experiment. The $K^0_S$Kπ invariant mass spectra from both decay modes reveal a rich content of charmonium resonances. New precise measurements of the η c and η c (2S) resonance parameters are performed and branching fraction measurements are obtained for B + decays to η c , J/ψ, η c (2S) and χ c1 resonances. In particular, the first observation and branching fraction measurement of B + → χ c0 K 0 π + is reported as well as first measurements of the B + → K 0 K + K - π + and B + → K 0 K + K - π + branching fractions. Dalitz plot analyses of η c → $K^0_S$Kπ and η c (2S) → $K^0_S$Kπ decays are performed. A new measurement of the amplitude and phase of the Kπ S-wave as functions of the Kπ mass is performed, together with measurements of the $K^*_0$(1430), $K^*_0$(1950) and a 0 (1700) parameters. Finally, the branching fractions of χ c1 decays to K* resonances are also measured.

Observation of a Resonant Structure near the D s + D s - Threshold in the B + → D s + D s - K + Decay

An amplitude analysis of the B + → $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ ⁢K + decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X⁡(3960), is observed in the $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width, and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956 ± 5 ± 10 MeV, 43 ± 13 ± 8 MeV, and J P⁢C = 0 ++ , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of c$\overline{c}$s$\overline{s}$ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the 0 ++ assignment or by a J/ψ⁢Φ ↔ $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ coupled-channel effect.

Evidence for Modification of $b$ Quark Hadronization in High-Multiplicity $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ mesons relative to $B^0$ mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV over the forward rapidity interval 2 < $y$ < 4.5 as a function of the charged particle multiplicity measured in the event. Evidence at the 3.4$σ$ level is found for an increase of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^0$ cross sections with multiplicity at transverse momenta below 6 GeV /$c$, with no significant multiplicity dependence at higher transverse momentum. Comparison with data from $e^+$ $e^–$ collisions implies that the density of the hadronic medium may affect the production rates of $B$ mesons. This is qualitatively consistent with the emergence of quark coalescence as an additional hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity collisions.

Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in Z -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a Z boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 < p T < 100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < η <4. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb –1 . Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.
