A method for predicting full scale buffet response with rigid wind tunnel model fluctuating pressure data. Volume 1: Prediction method development and assessment

The method requires unsteady aerodynamic forces, natural airplane modes, and the measured pressure data as input. A gust response computer program is used to calculate buffet response due to the forcing function posed by the measured pressure data. By calculating both symmetric and antisymmetric solutions, upper and lower bounds on full-scale buffet response are formed. Comparisons of predictions with flight test results are made and the effects of horizontal tail loads and static aeroelasticity are shown. Discussions are also presented on the effects of primary wing torsion modes, chordwise and spanwise phase angles, and altitude.

A method for predicting full scale buffet response with rigid wind tunnel model fluctuating pressure data. Volume 2: Power spectral densities for method assessment

The predicted upper and lower bounds power spectra for all of the cases and response items given in Volume 1 are plotted. The flight test power spectra are shown on each prediction plot for the nominal value of angle of attack that most closely agrees with the flexible angle for the prediction. The flight test and prediction conditions are given in tabular form for all cases considered.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds: Phase 1: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 1: Summary of technical approach, results and conclusions

The structural response to aerodynamic buffet during moderate to high-g maneuvers at subsonic and transonic speeds was investigated. The investigation is reported in three volumes. This volume presents a summary of the investigation with a complete description of the technical approach, description of the aircraft, its instrumentation, the data reduction procedures, results and conclusion.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 1: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 2: Plotted power spectra

Volume 2 of this three volume report is presented. This volume presents plotted variations of power spectral density data with frequency for each structural response item for each data sampled and analyzed during the course of the investigation. Some of the information contained in Volume 1 are repeated to allow the reader to identify the specific conditions appropriate to each plot presented and to interpret the data.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 1: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 3: Tabulated power spectra

Volume 3 of this three volume report is presented. This volume presents power spectral density in tabular form for the convenience of those who might wish to perform additional analysis. Some of the information contained in Volume 1 is again repeated (as in volume 2) in this volume to allow the reader to identify the specific conditions appropriate to each tabular listing and for further analysis.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 2: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 1: Summary of technical approach, results and conclusions

A detailed investigation of the flight buffeting response of the F-111A was performed in two phases. In Phase 1 stochastic analysis techniques were applied to wing and fuselage responses for maneuvers flown at subsonic speeds and wing leading edge sweep of 26 degrees. Power spectra and rms values were obtained. This report gives results of Phase 2 where the analyses were extended to include maneuvers flown at wing leading edge sweep values of 50 and 75.5 degrees at subsonic and supersonic speeds and the responses examined were expanded to include vertical shear, bending moment, and hingeline torque of the left and right horizontal tails. Power spectra, response time histories, variations of rms response with angle of attack and effects of wing sweep and Mach number are presented and discussed. Some Phase 1 results are given for comparison purposes.

Development and evaluation of a new method for predicting aircraft buffet response

The buffet prediction method uses rigid wind tunnel model fluctuating pressure data to form a buffet forcing function. The response is then calculated with a mathematical dynamic model of the airplane developed for gust response analysis. By including the extremes of phasing and contribution of symmetric and antisymmetric airplane responses, the upper and lower bounds are established for buffet response. F-111A flight test data show good agreement with predicted bounds for a variety of flight conditions.

Update on an investigation of flight buffeting of a variable-sweep aircraft

A detailed investigation of flight buffeting response of an F-111A aircraft was performed. AIAA Paper No. 74-358 presented results of an initial study of wing and fuselage responses measured at subsonic speeds and wing leading-edge sweep of 26 degrees. The present paper gives additional results for wing sweeps of 26, 50 and 72.5 degrees at Mach numbers up to 1.2 including horizontal tail responses. Power spectra, response time histories, variations of rms response with angle of attack, and effects of Mach number and wing sweep angle are discussed.

A detailed investigation of flight buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds

The structural response to aerodynamic buffeting during moderate-to-high-g maneuvers was investigated. Dynamic response data measured during a flight loads program were analyzed to obtain power spectra and rms values of response for 19 sensors mounted on the test aircraft. In this paper, peaks in the power spectra of accelerations measured at the wing tips, center of gravity and pilot's seat, and wing vertical shear, bending moment and torsional moments are correlated with natural vibration modes. The amplitudes of response are compared to show effects of angle of attack, sensor type and location, Mach number, and altitude.
