Aeroservoelastic Flight Dynamic Modeling of UAM Conceptual Vehicles

This paper presents an aeroservoelastic flight dynamic modeling approach for NASA Lift+Cruise eVTOL aircraft in forward flight. A conceptual aerodynamic analysis for forward flight is performed in CHARM, a rotorcraft aeromechanics unsteady vortex-lattice flow solver. A trim analysis is performed to obtain the steady state aerodynamic information at a trim point to be used for the aeroelastic analysis. A NASTRAN finite element model for the Lift+Cruise vehicle is available. The structural dynamic mode shapes are extracted from the NASTRAN for the aeroelastic analysis. An aeroservoelastic model is developed using the Theodorsen’s theory. A stability and control derivative analysis is performed to formulate a flight dynamic model of the Lift+Cruise vehicle. An aeroservoelastic flight dynamic model is formulated by coupling these two models together. Flight dynamic and flutter analyses are performed to determine vehicle stability and flutter-free operation.

Wake Disturbance-Based Separation Evaluation for Urban Air Mobility Aircraft

This paper builds upon previous research to evaluate Urban Air Mobility (UAM) flight dynamics in the presence of wake disturbances. A model for fixed-wing-generated wake effects is applied to a Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT) Lift+Cruise UAM trail aircraft operating in the fixed-wing Cruise configuration. The wake effects are evaluated at various longitudinal and latitudinal separation configurations to determine the most hazardous wake encounter situation. Trim calculations and closed-loop simulations show a trailing aircraft flying directly into a wake vortex as the most hazardous scenario. Furthermore, trailing behind a larger aircraft at similar speeds greatly increases the safe separation distance. These considerations indicate a need for dynamic pairwise separation criteria to enable dense Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) operations while maintaining safety.

Analytical Flight Dynamic Model Development for eVTOL Aircraft

This paper presents an analytical flight dynamic model development method for a multi- rotor eVTOL aircraft in hover and transition flight. The method captures the analytical stability and control sensitivities of rotor unsteady aerodynamic loads about a trim solution generated by a rotorcraft aeromechanics comprehensive analysis tool. The rotor aerody- namic forces include circulatory and non-circulatory components to account for unsteady aerodynamics. The circulatory forces are corrected for unsteady aerodynamics using the time-domain approximation of Theodorsen’s function. The integrated flight dynamic model includes the rigid-body aircraft flight dynamics, inflow dynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, and blade pitch and rotor actuator dynamics. Stability analyses shows that the Lift+Cruise aircraft is statically unstable in roll and yaw axes and also dynamically unstable in hover. Closed-loop feedback control is necessary for stable hover flight.
