Addendum to 'A new hybrid algorithm for computing a fast discrete Fourier transform'

The reported investigation represents a continuation of a study conducted by Reed and Truong (1979), who proposed a hybrid algorithm for computing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The proposed technique employs a Winograd-type algorithm in conjunction with the Mersenne prime-number theoretic transform to perform a DFT. The implementation of the technique involves a considerable number of additions. The new investigation shows an approach which can reduce the number of additions significantly. It is proposed to use Winograd's algorithm for computing the Mersenne prime-number theoretic transform in the transform portion of the hybrid algorithm.

An extensive bibliography on long baseline interferometry

Long baseline interferometry has grown from a simple concept of an optical device for detecting light fringes to a highly theoretical and sophisticated system assisted by computers and modern electronic components. The areas of applications include radio astronomy, radio science, geodesy, tectonics, space navigation, and seismology.

On the fundamental structure of Galois switching functions

In connection with investigations conducted by Menger (1969), Benjauthrit and Reed (1976), and Pradhan (1978) two methods have been reported for deriving a unique Galois switching function from a given truth table description of the function. However, neither of the two methods appears satisfactory. One method often contains many redundant terms in its formulation, whereas the second method requires a great number of multiplications and additions. By some algebraic manipulations, an expanded formula is obtained which combines the best features of both methods. This formula makes it possible to compute the coefficients of the desired function more directly and probably with less effort. The conduction of calculations by means of the new formula is illustrated with the aid of examples.

Transform decoding of Reed-Solomon codes over GF(2 to the 2n power using the techniques of Winograd

An algorithm for computing a Fourier-like transform over GF(2 to the (second power) to the n power), where n = 1,2,3,4,5, was developed to encode and decode and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes of length 2 to the (second power) to the n power. Such as RS detector is considerably faster than a decoder that uses the conventional fast transform over GF(2 to the (second power) to the n power).

On decoding of Reed-Solomon codes over GF/32/ and GF/64/ using the transform techniques of Winograd

An algorithm based on the Winograd (1976) method is developed to compute a Fourier-like transform over Galois field GF(2 exp n) for n equal to 5 and 6. It is shown that this transform algorithm requires fewer multiplications than the more conventional fast transform algorithm described by Gentleman (1968). Such a transform can be used to encode and decode Reed-Solomon codes of length (2 exp n) -1.

DSN telemetry system performance using a maximum likelihood convolutional decoder

Results are described of telemetry system performance testing using DSN equipment and a Maximum Likelihood Convolutional Decoder (MCD) for code rates 1/2 and 1/3, constraint length 7 and special test software. The test results confirm the superiority of the rate 1/3 over that of the rate 1/2. The overall system performance losses determined at the output of the Symbol Synchronizer Assembly are less than 0.5 db for both code rates. Comparison of the performance is also made with existing mathematical models. Error statistics of the decoded data are examined. The MCD operational threshold is found to be about 1.96 db.

On the fundamental structure of Galois switching functions

It is shown that the fundamental structure of Galois switching functions follows naturally from that of Boolean switching functions. An expanded formula for deriving multimomial Galois switching functions is provided with illustrations of its application.

Review of finite fields: Applications to discrete Fourier, transforms and Reed-Solomon coding

An attempt is made to provide a step-by-step approach to the subject of finite fields. Rigorous proofs and highly theoretical materials are avoided. The simple concepts of groups, rings, and fields are discussed and developed more or less heuristically. Examples are used liberally to illustrate the meaning of definitions and theories. Applications include discrete Fourier transforms and Reed-Solomon coding.

X-band antenna gain and system noise temperature of 64-meter deep space stations

A set of measured data on the X-band performance of the three 64-meter deep space stations was obtained for use in future mission telecommunication design and predictions. The test configuration and measurement procedure is described. A method of modelling attenuation due to the atmosphere is given. Radio source brightness temperature and flux density are reviewed.

DSN telemetry system performance with convolutionally coded data: Maximum likelihood decoding

DSN telemetry system performance is analyzed based on convolutionally coded data for the short constraint length 7:1/2 codes at low bit rates, 8 to 2,048 bits per second, obtained from CTA 21 for the S-band configuration. The results indicate that a loss of one or more decibels in the system performance may be expected due to system degradation. Also, burst error lengths up to 100 bits may not be unusual in actual operational situations.

DSN telemetry system performance with convolutionally code data

The results obtained to date and the plans for future experiments for the DSN telemetry system were presented. The performance of the DSN telemetry system in decoding convolutionally coded data by both sequential and maximum likelihood techniques is being determined by testing at various deep space stations. The evaluation of performance models is also an objective of this activity.
