Life Sciences Centrifuge Facility assessment

This report provides an assessment of the status of the Centrifuge Facility being developed by ARC for flight on the International Space Station Alpha. The assessment includes technical status, schedules, budgets, project management, performance of facility relative to science requirements, and identifies risks and issues that need to be considered in future development activities.

Spacelab missions overview

This paper identifies the roles and responsibilities of the Office of Space Science and Applications Flight Systems Division for Spacelab Payload Mission Management. It discusses a typical 4-year development cycle for a dedicated Spacelab mission and briefly describes the dedicated discipline laboratory concept. All Spacelab missions previously flown and those currently manifested for flight are identified and briefly discussed.

The Cambridge encyclopedia of space (revised edition)

A comprehensive and intensively illustrated development history is presented for spaceflight, ranging over its basic concepts' speculative and fictional origins, the historical roots of rocket-related technologies, and the scientific accomplishments of earth orbit and interplanetary missions to date. Attention is given to propulsion systems, spaceflight launch centers, satellite systems, and solar system exploration by the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Current space-related activities encompass the meteorology, remote sensing, telecommunications and direct broadcasting, and navigation functions of unmanned satellites, as well as such manned spacecraft roles as medical and materials science research. The military uses of space, and increasingly important space industrialization concepts, are discussed as well.

An overview of the Spacelab program

A detailed review is presented of Spacelab experiments, equipment, methodologies, and aims emphasizing the 16 dedicated missions for Space Shuttle flights. Extensive illustrations of experimental set-ups and payload configurations are given showing the Space Shuttle payload bay. Among the experiments described are: (1) the Astro-1 UV and X-ray astronomy mission; (2) the Spacelab Life Science-1 mission for human activity in space; (3) the International Microgravity Laboratory-1 for materials and biological studies; (4) the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science to study solar effects on the earth; and (5) the Space Radar Laboratory for mapping the earth. Spacelab ground support is discussed and shown to be important for the planning, integration, and flight activities of the experiment programs.
