Characterize and control the multi-range structure of solution-phase systems with resonant x-ray scattering

This work aims at demonstrating the feasibility and impact of Anomalous X-ray Scattering (AXS) in characterizing the multi-range structures of solution-state systems. We will show preliminary investigation of long-range correlations in concentrated aqueous electrolytes with a combination of AXS and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We will also start exploring the capability of AXS to capture intra- and inter-molecular structure of dilute molecular systems, and specifically its sensitivity to the chemical environment surrounding active metal sites. We anticipate that the development of this method will help us to understand ion solvation and transport, which affect the performances of, for instance, electrocatalytic cells, as well as to identify/control the intrinsic structural factors that lead to selectivity, efficiency, and stability control during catalysis.

Opportunities of Soft Materials Research at Advanced Photon Source

The storage ring of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) will be upgraded to a fourth-generation ring after more than two decades of operation. During its operation as a 7 GeV ring, scattering beamlines have been built to support soft matter research programs to take advantage of the high flux and high energy beam provided by the ring. Further, the 6 GeV multi-bend achromat storage ring installed by the APS-Upgrade (APS-U) will provide new opportunities for the scattering beamlines. In this news, activities of those APS beamlines in conjunction with the APS-U will be briefly reviewed along with some recent technical highlights of their soft matter research programs.

Role of Zeolite Structural Properties toward Iodine Capture: A Head-to-head Evaluation of Framework Type and Chemical Composition

This study evaluated zeolite-based sorbents for iodine gas [I2(g)] capture. Based on the framework structures and porosities, five zeolites, including two faujasite (FAU), one ZSM-5 (MFI), one mesoMFI, one ZSM-22 (TON), as well as two mesoporous materials, were evaluated for I2(g) capture at room temperature and 150 °C in an iodine-saturated environment. From these preliminary studies, the three best-performing zeolites were ion-exchanged with Ag+ and evaluated for I2(g) capture under similar conditions. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data suggest that Ag-FAU frameworks were the materials with the highest capacity for I2(g) in this study, showing ~3× higher adsorption compared to Ag-mordenite (Ag-MOR) at room temperature, but X-ray diffraction measurements show that the faujasite structure collapsed during the adsorption studies because of dealumination. The Ag-MFI zeolites are decent sorbents in real-life applications, showing both good sorption capacities and higher stability. In-depth analyses and characterizations, including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, revealed the influence of structural and chemical properties of zeolites on the performance for iodine adsorption from the gas phase.

Foldable semi-ladder polymers: novel aggregation behavior and high-performance solution-processed organic light-emitting transistors

A critical issue in developing high-performance organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) is to balance the trade-off between charge transport and light emission in a semiconducting material. Although traditional materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) or organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have shown modest performance in OLET devices, design strategies towards high-performance OLET materials and the crucial structure–performance relationship remain unclear. Our research effort in developing cross-conjugated weak acceptor-weak donor copolymers for luminescent properties lead us to an unintentional discovery that these copolymers form coiled foldamers with intramolecular H-aggregation, leading to their exceptional OLET properties. An impressive external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.9% in solution-processed multi-layer OLET devices was achieved.
