National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Third-Generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS)

NASA has contracted with Boeing to provide two third-generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) designated TDRS K and L, with an option to provide two additional satellites designated TDRS M and N. These TDRS will be used to continue and enhance the user support services of the existing first- and second-generation TDRS spacecraft. The existing TDRS, in conjunction with the TDRS Ground Terminals at the White Sands NM Complex (WSC) and Guam, constitute the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The TDRSS, with other supporting elements, is referred to as the Space Network (SN). The launch of the TDRS K is projected for 2012 with TDRS L planned to follow in 2013. The contract also provides for the modifications to the TDRS Ground Terminals at the WSC required for operation of the new TDRS. This paper provides an overview of the customer services provided by the existing and new TDRS. In addition, planned future customer services such as Bandwidth Efficient Modulation (BEM) and new coding schemes are briefly discussed.

NASA's next generation tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS): Launch and operational ground segment architecture

The next generation's tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS) spacecraft currently under development for user support into the next century, is reported. Modifications will be made to the TDRSS ground terminals required for user support, the control of the TDRSS and the support of transfer orbit operations. The modifications will be made while ensuring compatibility with the present generation of TDRSS. The capabilities of the new spacecraft are described and compared with those of the existing generation. The architecture of the modified ground terminals and that of a new terminal, are detailed.

Second tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS) ground terminal - STGT

The STGT will provide high availability command and control and improved services to users of NASA's Space Network in the 1990s and beyond. The Space Network, comprising the TDRSS, will be the primary communications gateway for Space Station Freedom and other user's spacecraft and their ground support elements. The STGT will contain a redundant, distributed computer system providing configuration and control of redundant RF to baseband equipment chains for throughput of user data, for user tracking services and for control and monitoring of the TDR Satellites. An interface with NASA's Network Control Center, located at the Goddard Space Flight Center, provides automated scheduling and control of the STGT. A local TDRSS Operations Control Center for local monitoring and back-up control and an interface with the Domestic Satellite for data distribution will be provided by the STGT. This paper describes the STGT, with emphasis on configuration, control and monitoring of those elements providing TDRSS services to user spacecraft.
