Status of the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project

The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) has continued its work generating evaluations of new and historical criticality benchmark experiments since the last update to the nuclear criticality safety community at the 11th International Conference on Nuclear Criticality Safety (ICNC 2019) in Paris, France. Three additional versions of the ICSBEP Handbook have been published since that update, and the Technical Review Group (TRG) held two in-person (in 2019 and 2023) and three virtual (2020 and 2021) meetings to review and approve additional benchmarks. The 2019 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook included five new evaluations with 79 new configurations, the 2020 version of the ICSBEP Handbook contained five new evaluations totaling 76 new configurations, and the 2021 version of the ICSBEP handbook contained five new evaluations with a total of 57 different configurations. The ICSBEP TRG met in October and December 2021, to review benchmarks for potential inclusion in the 2022 ICSBEP Handbook, with seven evaluations receiving provisional approval pending resolution of review group comments. Final comment resolution for some of these evaluations is currently underway and handbook publication should be completed soon. The ICSBEP TRG met again in person in April 2023 to review benchmarks for the 2023 ICSBEP Handbook, provisionally approving 7 new evaluations. The ICSBEP continues to deliver high-quality, peer reviewed evaluations of experiments relevant to the nuclear criticality safety community.

Nuclide inventory characterization of EBR-II MOX fuel test pins

Characterization of 3 mixed oxide (MOX) fuel pins from the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) SPA-2/-2B experiment program was performed in support of the Advanced Reactor Experiments for Sodium Fast Reactor Fuels (ARES) joint project between Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The characterization efforts were performed to enable transient testing in the Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) facility at INL and will include post irradiation examination (PIE) and other analyses. MOX fuel pins UW02009, 02011, and 06024 were historically irradiated from 1989 to 1994 for a total of 822.42 effective full power days (EFPDs) and peak burnup of approximately 14.3 at.% (atomic percent of heavy metal atoms, ∼134.4 GWd/t). They had since been placed in storage until a future use was identified. Characterization of the fission products and activation of each fuel pin was necessary to enable removal from storage and subsequent irradiation testing or PIE activities. The initial fuel pin geometry and composition were established using historical documentation. Irradiation history details were utilized to compute irradiated and decayed fuel pin masses, atomic densities, and activities. A pellet-wise axial neutron flux was also computed to assist in evaluation of the axial distribution of {sup 235}U and {sup 239}Pu, per pellet, within each of the test fuel pins. The results computed herein supported experiment design for advanced high-burnup MOX fuel designs under slow transient overpower (MOXTOP) conditions, which was Phase I of the ARES project. (authors)

Contribution to the IRPHEP handbook since Physor 2018

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Reactor Physics Experiment Evaluation Project (IRPhEP) continue to preserve and evaluate integral reactor physics experiment data to support nuclear energy and technology needs. International contributions are collated within the International Handbook of Evaluated Reactor Physics Benchmark Experiments (IRPhEP Handbook). The 2021 edition of the IRPhEP Handbook now contains data for 57 unique nuclear facilities with benchmark specifications for 169 experimental series, of which four are draft evaluations. Distributed with the IRPhEP Handbook and available online is the IRPhEP Database and Analysis Tool (IDAT), allowing users to search and interrogate the data. Since Physor 2018, there have been 11 minor revisions to existing benchmark evaluations, significant revisions to two evaluations, one draft evaluation, and nine new evaluations. The corona virus pandemic has delayed international activities supporting the production of additional content for the IRPhEP Handbook. However, efforts continue for numerous endeavors to complete new reactor physics benchmark evaluations to support current and future validation needs. Those interested in serving as evaluators and/or reviewers are strongly encouraged to participate. This paper provides a summary of IRPhEP content and activities since Physor 2018. (authors)
