Composite fracture using the normal stress ratio theory

Experiments were performed on center-notched specimens of unidirectional AS4/3501-6 graphite-epoxy subjected to varied far-field loading conditions. Specimens tested include on-axis and off-axis tensile coupons and Iosipescu shear specimens, allowing the study of normal, shear, and combined far-field loading conditions. From the tests, the direction of initial crack extension and the far-field stresses at crack initiation and fracture are obtained. The normal stress ratio theory is subsequently applied within a macroscopic-level homogeneous anisotropic stress solution to predict the direction of crack extension, critical stresses, and other crack growth behavior for the experiments. Comparison between experimental results and theoretical predictions indicates that application of the normal stress ratio theory within a macroscopic-level stress analysis has significant potential as an approach to modeling composite crack growth.

On fracture of fibrous composites

The problem of an existing through-the-thickness center notch in a unidirectional fibrous composite is investigated using a homogeneous anisotropic elasticity analysis in conjunction with various crack growth criteria. Tensor polynomial, strain energy density, and normal stress ratio criteria are applied as crack growth direction criteria and compared to experimental observations. For the cases and criteria studied, only the normal stress ratio criterion exhibits an ability to correctly predict crack growth direction. The normal stress ratio criterion is subsequently applied to the same cases as a failure criterion. Comparison with experiment indicates that these predictions exhibit reasonable correlation with observed critical stresses. Finally, the macroscopic approach to the problem used in this study is compared to a microscopic shear lag analysis of experimental results in the literature. The comparison indicates that both approaches yield essentially identical predictions. The comparisons made with other criteria and approaches indicate that application of the normal stress ratio within a macroscopic level analysis has great potential as an approach to modeling composite crack growth.

Crack growth in unidirectional graphite-epoxy under biaxial loading

An anisotropic elasticity crack tip stress analysis is implemented using three crack extension direction criteria (the normal stress ratio, the tensor polynominal and the strain energy density) to predict the direction of crack extension in unidirectional of axis graphite-epoxy. The theoretical predictions of crack extension direction are then compared with experimental results for 15 deg off axis tensile coupons with center cracks. Specimens of various aspect ratios and crack orientations are analyzed. It is shown that only the normal stress ratio criterion predicts the correct direction of crack growth.

Crack growth direction in unidirectional off-axis graphite-epoxy

An anisotropic elasticity crack tip stress analysis is implemented using three crack extension direction criteria (the normal stress ratio, the tensor polynominal and the strain energy density) to predict the direction of crack extension in unidirectional off axis graphite-epoxy.
