Biodetection grinder

Grinder, which employs shearing action with minimum energy input, obtains desired particle sizes in materials ranging from soft plastics to hard rocks. Modified version of this grinder might be used in hospitals and biological laboratories involved with bacteriological research and testing.

Biodetection grinder

A biodetection grinder for sampling aerospace materials for microorganisms without killing them was constructed. The device employs a shearing action to generate controllable sized particles with a minimum of energy input. Tests were conducted on materials ranging from soft plastics to hard rocks.

Microbiological surveillance of food handling at NASA-MSFC

A microbiological surveillance program of cafeterias and snack bars was conducted to supplement the inspections by NASA Medical Center personnel and to gather information for cafeteria management to pinpoint areas of possible contamination. The work conducted under the program from its inception in January, 1972, to its termination on September 15, 1972 is summarized. Ten food handling facilities were included in the surveillance at NASA-MSFC.

Microbiological assay of the Marshall Space Flight Center neutral buoyancy simulator

A neutral buoyancy simulator tank system is described in terms of microbiological and medical safety for astronauts. The system was designed to simulate a gravity-free state for evaluation of orbital operations in a microorganism-free environment. Methods for the identification and elimination of specific microorganisms are dealt with as measures for a pure system of space environment simulation.

Chemical Processing Manual

Chemical processes presented in this document include cleaning, pickling, surface finishes, chemical milling, plating, dry film lubricants, and polishing. All types of chemical processes applicable to aluminum, for example, are to be found in the aluminum alloy section. There is a separate section for each category of metallic alloy plus a section for non-metals, such as plastics. The refractories, super-alloys and titanium, are prime candidates for the space shuttle, therefore, the chemical processes applicable to these alloys are contained in individual sections of this manual.
