Charges on Strange Quark Nuggets in Space

This viewgraph presentation reviews the work done in calculations to find ZN such that the rate of ambient photons ionize the strange quark nuggets (SQNs) Electrons are equal to the rate of ambient e's to replace them.

Charges on Strange Quark Nuggets in Space

Witten (1984): 3 quark flavors implies same P.E., but less K.E. by Pauli Principle. Farhi and Jaffe find SQN B.E./q rises to asymptotic value as N=A/3 rises. A. De Rujula and S. Glashow identify bunch of methods of detecting SQNs. M. Alford, K.Rajagopa1, and F.Wilczek find Cooper pairing of SQN q's. Primordial: depends on cooling by evaporation being less than cooling by neutrino emission and any other mechanisms. Evap approx. MA(sup 2/3); neutrinos NM. M>10{20} works. Collisions of SQS's from NS binaries. Explosive events could give trifecta: gamma absorption for E>2m(e); emission at 2m(e); and emission at m(e-) from e+ production. There are questions of e+ production in COG, and of pair instability Sne. SQM roles possible. Possible detection of SQN emission line from e- capture during X-ray flare needs estimate.

Autoionization

Since the original chapter, we briefly review two calculational methods used for basic applications in autoionization of few body systems: (a) complex rotation and (b) a pseudopotential method. Complex rotation, briefly mentioned above, has been extensively applied with great accuracy. Two additional basic systems to be mentioned here are H(sup -) and Ps(sup -) (Ps=positronium). In complex rotation the particle distances are multiplied by the common phase factor given.

Calcium-Dependent Protein Kinase Genes in Corn Roots

Two cDNAs encoding Ca-2(+) - Dependent Protein Kinases (CDPKs), Corn Root Protein Kinase 1 and 2 (CRPK 1, CRPK 2) were isolated from the root tip library of corn (Zea mays L., cv. Merit) and their nucleotide sequences were determined. Deduced amino acid sequences of both the clones have features characteristic of plant CDPKS, including all 11 conserved serine/threonine kinase subdomains, a junction domain and a calmodulin-like domain with four Ca-2(+), -binding sites. Northern analysis revealed that CRPKI mRNA is preferentially expressed in roots, especially in the root tip; whereas, the expression of CRPK2 mRNA was very low in all the tissues tested. In situ hybridization experiments revealed that CRPKI mRNA is highly expressed in the root apex, as compared to other parts of the root. Partially purified CDPK from the root tip phosphorylates syntide-2, a common peptide substrate for plant CDPKs, and the phosphorylation was stimulated 7-fold by the addition of Ca-2(+). Our results show that two CDPK isoforms are expressed in corn roots and they may be involved in the Ca-2(+)-dependent signal transduction process.
