Collisionless zonal-flow dynamics in quasisymmetric stellarators

The linear collisionless plasma response to a zonal-density perturbation in quasisymmetric stellarators is studied, including the geodesic-acoustic-mode oscillations and the Rosenbluth–Hinton residual flow. While the geodesic-acoustic-mode oscillations in quasiaxisymmetric configurations are similar to tokamaks, they become non-existent in quasi-helically symmetric configurations when the effective safety factor in helical-angle coordinates is small. Compared with concentric-circular tokamaks, the Rosenbluth–Hinton residual is also found to be multiplied by a geometric factor $\mathcal {C}$ that arises from the flux-surface-averaged classical polarization. Using the near-axis-expansion framework, we derive an analytic expression for $\mathcal {C}$ , which varies significantly among different configurations. These analytic results are compared with numerical simulation results from the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code GTC, and good agreement with the theoretical Rosenbluth–Hinton residual level is achieved when the quasisymmetry error is small enough.

Gradient drift eigenmodes in the equatorial electrojet

The problem of kilometer-scale irregularities in the daytime equatorial electrojet is revisited by means of an eigenmode analysis of the gradient drift instability. Realistic physical parameters are used, including the modeled altitude variations of ion and electron collision frequencies and mobilities. The full fourth-order system of two coupled differential equations (each of second order) for the denisty and electrostatic potential perturbations is solved numerically by a relaxation technique. Under some approximations, the fourth-order system can be shown to reduce to a second-order differential equation for the perturbed potential or density. The latter is solved using a shooting technique and provides initial guesses for numerical solutions to the full problem. It is shown that the linear growth rate peaks for kilometer-scale waves, contrary to the findings of recent initial-value studies. This occurs because the equilibrium velocity shear is much more effective as a damping mechanism for short-wavelength modes than it is for the longer, kilometer-scale modes. These results provide a natural qualitative explanation for the observed dominance of kilometer-scale structures in the daytime electrojet spectrum.

Ballooning stability of anisotropic, rotating plasmas

The linearized equation of motion is given in a Lagrangian representation for a rotating plasma with anisotropic pressure. A WKB theory is developed for large-n ballooning modes in an axisymmetric configuration with field-aligned and rigid toroidal flows. In the presence of field-aligned flows, it is shown that a resonance occurs which is strongly suggestive of a generalized mirror instability. In the presence of toroidal rotation, a possible stabilizing effect is identified for P(normal) greater than P(parallel). Finally, as a special case of the theory, the necessary and sufficient conditions for stability in a static, anisotropic plasma are obtained.

Collisionless tearing instability in magnetotail plasmas

The problem of the linear stability of collisionless tearing modes in the earth's magnetotail is revisited. It is found that the collisionless tearing mode is linearly unstable with wavelengths of the order of 10 R(E). It is shown that an important feature neglected in earlier theories is a nonzero equilibrium B(y)-field. The physics of the instability is elucidated in the context of a simple slab model and a sheared parabolic model which is representative of the magnetotail in which all three components of the magnetic field are nonzero. The dispersion equation for the instability is obtained by a boundary-layer analysis. The implications of the theory for recent observations on current disruption and diversion during substorms is discussed.

The Final Technical Report on linear and non-linear studies of Alfven waves in space is presented. Areas of research included relaxation of magnetotail plasmas with field-aligned currents; the equilibrium dayside magnetosphere; macroscale particle simulation of kinetic Alfven wave physics; ballooning stability of plasmas with sheared equilibrium flows; theory of the drift-mirror instability; collisionless tearing instability in magnetotail plasmas; and nonadiabatic behavior of the magnetic moment of a charged particle in a dipole magnetic field and the development of stochastic webs.

Ballooning stability of axisymmetric plasmas with sheared equilibrium flows

A WKB theory is formulated for large-n ballooning modes in axisymmetric, toroidal plasmas with sheared equilibrium flows. The validity of the standard ballooning respresentation is severely restricted in the presence of sheared toroidal flow, despite the fact that to leading order in (1/n), where n is the azimuthal number, the eigenmode equation contains only derivatives along a field line. Necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are obtained in a high-beta ordering for rigid toroidal rotation as well as field-aligned flows.

Relaxation of magnetotail plasmas with field-aligned currents

Equilibria of low free energy have been constructed for magnetotail plasmas (Bhattacharjee, 1987). This model is extended to obtain axisymmetric states which have the structure of flux ropes containing field-aligned currents. An interesting feature of these equilibria is a chain of magnetic islands along the tail axis. Theoretical results are compared with observations from ISEE 1 and ISEE 2 on flux ropes (Elphic et al., 1986).

Geometric angles in cyclic evolutions of a classical system

A perturbative method, using Lie transforms, is given for calculating the Hannay angle for slow, cyclic evolutions of a classical system, taking into account the finite rate of change of the Hamiltonian. The method is applied to the generalized harmonic oscillator. The classical Aharonov-Anandan angle is also calculated. The interpretational ambiguity in the definitions of geometrical angles is discussed.

Relaxation of magnetotail plasmas

A quasi-thermodynamic model is presented for the relaxation of magnetotail plasmas during substorms, followed by quiet times. It is proposed that the plasma relaxes to a state of low-potential energy subject to a small number of global constraints. The constraints are exactly preserved by all ideal motions and, approximately, by a wide class of motions of the plasma undergoing magnetic reconnection. A variational principle which minimizes the free energy predicts the relaxed state. Exact, two-dimensional solutions of the relaxed state are obtained. A universal feature of the exact solutions is a chain of magnetic islands along the tail axis. Sufficient conditions for the stability of relaxed states are obtained from the second variation of the free-energy functional.
