Distinguishing antiferromagnetic spin sublattices via the spin Seebeck effect

We measured spin Seebeck signals at the top and bottom surfaces of an antiferromagnetic Cr 2 O 3 film, using a Pt/Cr 2 O 3 /Pt trilayer. Our experimental data, combined with micromagnetic simulations, clearly demonstrate that the uncompensated sublattice at the top and bottom surfaces plays a decisive role in determining the symmetry of the spin Seebeck signals, providing fundamental insight for understanding the generation of spin Seebeck signal in antiferromagnetic materials.

In situ x-ray and electron scattering studies of oxide molecular beam epitaxial growth

We perform the first in situ synchrotron X-ray ray diffraction (SXRD) / reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) studies on the growth of complex oxide thin films by molecular beam epitaxy. The unique deposition chamber, located at the Advanced Photon Source, allows the preparation of complex oxide samples with monolayer precision and facilitates the formation of direct correlations between in situ X-ray studies and the more prevalent RHEED investigations. Importantly, because SXRD and RHEED probe different atomic-scale processes during thin film synthesis, their concomitant use enables the extraction of details concerning growth behavior than one cannot determine from either probe alone. We describe the results of such in situ studies on the epitaxial growth of perovskite LaNiO3on (La 0.18 Sr 0.82 )(Al 0.59 Ta 0.41 )O 3 (001). We find that during the earliest stages of growth, the RHEED and X-ray signals do not agree with each other, demonstrating that while regular RHEED oscillations may imply high quality growth, the film-substrate interface can undergo significant changes during deposition due to the occurrence of interdiffusion at the growth temperature.

Molecular beam epitaxy of the magnetic Kagome metal FeSn on LaAlO 3 (111)

Materials with Kagome layers are expected to give rise to rich physics arising from band structures with topological properties, spin liquid behavior, and the formation of Skyrmions. Until now, most work on Kagome materials has been performed on bulk samples due to difficulties in thin film synthesis. Here, by using molecular beam epitaxy, layered Kagome-structured FeSn films are synthesized on the (111) oriented LaAlO3 substrate. Both in situ and ex situ characterizations indicate that these films are highly crystalline and c-axis oriented, with atomically smooth surfaces. The films grow as disconnected islands, with lateral dimensions on the micron meter scale. By patterning Pt electrodes using a focused electron beam, the longitudinal and transverse resistance of single islands have been measured in magnetic fields. Our work opens a pathway for exploring mesoscale transport properties in thin films of Kagome materials and related devices.

Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects in epitaxial thin films of kagome semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn 3 Ge , an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall/Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D 0 19 Mn 3 Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects are observed in thermoelectric and spin-pumping devices. The anomalous Nernst signal in our Mn 3 Ge films is estimated to be 0.1 μV/K and is comparable to that in ferromagnetic Fe, despite Mn 3 Ge having a weak magnetization of ~ 3.5 m μ B / Mn at room temperature. In this work, the spin-mixing conductance is 90.5 nm – 2 at the Py / Mn 3 Ge interface, and the spin-Hall angle in Mn 3 Ge is estimated to be about eight times of that in Pt.

Fermi surface topology and nontrivial Berry phase in the flat-band semimetal Pd 3 Pb

A study of the Fermi surface of the putative topological semimetal Pd 3 Pb has been carried out using Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations measured in fields of up to 60 T. Pd 3 Pb has garnered attention in the community due to a peculiar Fermi surface that has been proposed theoretically by Ahn, Pickett, and Lee, Phys. Rev. B 98 , 035130 (2018) to host a dispersionless band along X - Γ as well as multiple triply degenerate band crossings that, under the influence of spin-orbit coupling, lead to ten fourfold degenerate Dirac points. Analysis of the SdH oscillation data verifies the calculated multisheet Fermi surface, revealing a Γ centered spheroid that had not been resolved experimentally in prior studies. A comprehensive, angle-dependent analysis of the phase of the SdH oscillations convincingly demonstrates a nontrivial Berry phase for two bands along Γ - R , supporting the theoretical predictions, while simultaneously evidencing interference between extremal orbits that mimics a trivial Berry phase at intermediate angles.
