Systems, devices, and methods for millimeter wave communication for unmanned aerial vehicles

Systems, devices, and methods are described for controlling, and communicating with, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over a millimeter wave (mmWave) communication network established between a base station and the UAVs. A communication system may include one or more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The communication system may further include one or more base stations including millimeter wave (mmWave) antennas configured to generate control signals to the one or more UAVs over an mmWave communication network.

Distributed and Secure Spectrum Sharing for 5G and 6G Networks

Secure spectrum sharing or spectrum co-existence of multiple 5G networks and future 6G networks is a powerful enabler technology. The National Spectrum Strategy (NSS) published by the White House in November, 2023, and the subsequent NSS implementation plan led by the National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA) is the driver of a national effort to enable co-existence of government incumbents and commercial networks in selected spectrum bands. Cellular networks such as 5G & 6G and non-cellular Wi-Fi 6E & 7 are the prominent wireless technologies considered for co-existence with incumbent wireless links. Security of the spectrum sharing solutions is a must to make this transformation of spectrum use possible, specially for mission critical communications. However, current spectrum sharing solutions rely on centralized data bases with inherent vulnerabilities. This paper focuses on secure spectrum sharing among multiple 5G networks using unlicensed and shared frequency bands. It presents an innovative AI/ML based distributed spectrum sharing approach that can be autonomously used by multiple networks. Each sharing network uses its own observation of the Radio Frequency (RF) environment, which consists of RF measurements reported from the 5G User Equipment (UE), to adjust the transmission power levels for secure co-existence. Data is presented to illustrate the superior performance of this solution compared to other spectrum sharing solutions where each network can utilize usage data of the other networks. Finally it discusses how this efficient spectrum sharing solution can evolve in the future for the 6G networks.

Systems, devices, and methods for authenticating millimeter wave devices

Systems, devices, and methods are described for millimeter wave device authentication. A system may include one or more access points. Each access point of the one or more access points is configured to extract, from one or more beam patterns generated via a client device, a beam feature associated with the client device. Each access point may also be configured to transmit the beam feature. The system may also include a server communicatively coupled to the one or more access points and including a database for storing known beam features. The server may be configured to receive the beam feature associated with the client device from at least one access point of the one or more access points. Also, the server may be configured to authenticate the client device in response to the received beam feature matching a known beam feature stored in the at least one database.

Jamming Detection for Low-Resolution SC-FDE Systems: A Machine Learning Approach

Jammers interfere with communication between base stations (BSs) and legitimate users, leading to degradation of wireless system performance. Our study focuses on jamming detection for wideband single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems with low-resolution analog-to digital converters (ADCs). In such systems, jamming detection is challenging because traditional analytical approaches cannot be directly applied due to the delay dispersion in wideband channels and the non-linearity induced by low-resolution ADCs. We propose a machine learning (ML)-based jamming detection method that directly uses the quantized receive signals. Significantly, our ML-based detector can be integrated into existing standard frameworks, such as unique word (UW)-based SC-FDE systems, as it uses existing pilots without requiring additional pilots for jamming detection. Through numerical simulations, we show that two or more bits provide satisfactory performance compared to unquantized scenarios. Additionally, we demonstrate that using more and well-separated pilot symbols improves performance.
