Successful cleanroom installation of PIP-II SSR2 coupler using robotic arm

To minimize the contamination of SRF cavities, remote installation techniques are needed during the installation of components. Recent work at Fermilab has been performed to begin the process of developing techniques for assembling cavities using robotics. Multiple alignment methods were prototyped including alignment and computer vision methods. Using a remotely controlled robotic arm, the alignment and installation of couplers have been successfully performed on prototype PIP-II SSR2 cavities in a cleanroom. The installation process will be shown to show to demonstrate the potential of future installations on other cavities and cavity ancillaries.

First conduction cooled photoinjector status

SRF photoguns become a promising candidate to produce highly stable electrons for UEM/UED applications because of the ultrahigh shot-to-shot stability compared to room temperature RF photoguns. SRF technology was prohibitively expensive for industrial use until two recent advancements: Nb3Sn and conduction cooling. SRF gun can provide a CW operation capability while consuming only 2W of RF power which eliminates the need of an expensive high power RF system and saves a facility footprint. Euclid is developing a continuous wave (CW), 1.5-cell, MeV-scale SRF conduction cooled photogun operating at 1.3 GHz. We aim for generation of the first beam in 2024. In this paper, we present the most up-to-date progress including results of the first cool down of the gun-cavity in the newly developed conduction cooled cryomodule and LLRF system development.

Latest Development of Electropolishing Optimization for 650 MHz Cavity

Electropolishing (EP) of 1.3 GHz niobium (Nb) superconducting RF cavities is conducted to achieve a desired smooth and contaminant-free surface that yields good RF performance. Achieving a smooth surface of a large-sized elliptical cavity with the standard EP conditions was found to be challenging. This work aimed to conduct a systematic parametric EP study to understand the effects of various EP parameters on the surface of 650 MHz cavities used in PIP-II linac. Parameters optimized in this study provided a smooth surface of the cavities. The electropolished cavities met the baseline requirement of field gradient and qualified for further surface treatment to improve the cavity quality factor.

The Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of LB650 Cavities

The 650 MHz cavities have a stronger requirement of niobium mechanical properties because of the geometric shape of the cavity due to reduced beta. The mechanical property of the niobium half-cell was measured following various heat treatments. The 5-cell cavities were tested in a controlled drop test fashion and the real-world road test. The result showed that the 900C heat treatment was compatible with cavity handling and transportation during production. The test provides the bases of the transportation specification and shipping container design guidelines.

LCLS-II-HE Status at Fermilab

The LCLS-II-HE project is an upgrade to the Linac Coherent Light Source facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab is part of the LCLS-II-HE collaboration and will deliver 14 cryomodules to SLAC for LCLS-II-HE. These cryomodules consist of eight 1.3 GHz 9-cell cavities. Cryomodule production is in progress, and four cryomodules have been delivered to SLAC. One of the cryomodules already delivered is the verification cryomodule that reached 200 MV total voltage in continuous wave mode. Status of cryomodule production, and lessons learned will be presented. Fermilab is also designing a buncher cryomodule as part of a low emittance injector design for the project. The design is near completion, and status will be reported.

First High-Gradient Results of UED/UEM SRF Gun at Cryogenic Temperatures

Benefiting from the rapid progress on RF photogun technologies in the past two decades, the development of MeV range ultrafast electron diffraction/microscopy (UED and UEM) has been identified as an enabling instrumentation. UEM or UED use low power electron beams with modest energies of a few MeV to study ultrafast phenomena in a variety of novel and exotic materials. SRF photoguns become a promising candidate to produce highly stable electrons for UEM/UED applications because of the ultrahigh shot-to-shot stability compared to room temperature RF photoguns. SRF technology was prohibitively expensive for industrial use until two recent advancements: Nb₃Sn and conduction cooling. The use of Nb₃Sn allows to operate SRF cavities at higher temperatures (4K) with low power dissipation which is within the reach of commercially available closed-cycle cryocoolers. Euclid is developing a continuous wave (CW), 1.5-cell, MeV-scale SRF conduction cooled photogun operating at 1.3 GHz. In this paper, we present first high gradient results of the gun conducted in liquid helium.

Extra-Cold EP Process at Fermilab

FNAL has established a cold Electro-Polishing (EP) method which maintains the outer surface temperature of cavity cell around 12~15°C during EP process. Cold EP has been applied on the various SRF cavities and contributed to achieve high RF performances with them. To investigate more feasibility and capability of EP at lower temperature, the FNAL EP temperature control tool was recently improved. Extra-cold EP process below 0°C at cavity cell region was successfully performed on 1.3 GHz 1-cell cavity. A compatible RF performance with cold EP method was also demonstrated during the cavity vertical testing. The details of extra-cold EP process and the cavity test results will be presented.

LCLS-II Cryomodules Production Experience and Lessons Learned Towards LCLS-II-HE Project

LCLS-II is an upgrade project for the linear coherent light source (LCLS) at SLAC. The LCLS-II linac consists of thirty-five 1.3 GHz and two 3.9 GHz superconducting RF (SRF) continuous wave (CW) cryomodules with high quality factor cavities. Cryomodules were produced at Fermilab and at Jefferson Lab in collaboration with SLAC. Fermilab successfully completed the assembly, testing and delivery of seventeen 1.3 GHz and three 3.9 GHz cryomodules. LCLS-II-HE is a planned upgrade project to LCLS-II. The LCLS-II-HE linac will consist of twenty-three 1.3 GHz cryomodules with high gradient and high quality factor cavities. This paper presents LCLS-II-HE cryomodule production plans, emphasizing the improvements done based on the challenges, mitigations, and lessons learned from LCLS-II.

Toward Qualifications of HB and LB 650 MHz Cavities for the Prototype Cryomodules for the PIP-II Project

High-beta (HB) and low-beta (LB) 650 MHz cryomodules are key components of the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project. In this contribution we present the results of several 5-cell HB650 cavities that have been processed and tested with the purpose of qualifying them for the prototype cryomodule assembly, which will take place later this year. We also present the first results obtained in LB650 single-cell cavities process optimization. Taking advantage of their very similar geometry, we are also analyzing the effect of different surface treatments in FRIB’s 5-cell medium-beta 644MHz cavities. Cavities processed with N-doping and mid-T baking showed very promising results in term of both Q-factors and accelerating gradient for these low-beta structures.

Status of PIP-II 650 MHz Prototype Dressed Cavity Qualification

Low-beta and high-beta sections of PIP-II linac will use nine low-beta cryomodules with four cavities each and four high-beta cryomodules with six cavities each. These cavities will be produced and qualified in collaboration between Fermilab and the international partner labs. Prior to their installation into prototype cryomodules, several dressed cavities, which include jacketed cavities, high power couplers, and tuners, will be qualified in STC horizontal test bed at Fermilab. After qualification of bare β = 0.9 cavities at Fermilab, several pre-production β = 0.92 and β = 0.61 cavities have been and are being fabricated and qualified. Procurements have also been started for high power couplers and tuners. In this contribution we present the current status of prototype dressed cavity qualification for PIP-II.
