A flexible data acquisition system architecture for the Nab experiment

Here, the Nab experiment will measure the electron–neutrino correlation and Fierz interference term in free neutron beta decay to test the Standard Model and probe Beyond the Standard Model physics. Using National Instrument’s PXIe-5171 Reconfigurable Oscilloscope module, we have developed a data acquisition system that is not only capable of meeting Nab’s specifications, but flexible enough to be adapted in situ as the experimental environment dictates. The L1 and L2 trigger logic can be reconfigured to optimize the system for coincidence event detection at runtime through configuration files and LabVIEW controls. This system is capable of identifying L1 triggers at a rate of at least 1 MHz, while reading out a peak signal rate of approximately 2 GB/s. During the commissioning phase of the experiment, the system ran at a sustained readout rate of 400 MB/s of detector signal data originating from roughly 6 kHz L2 triggers, well within the peak performance of the system.

Delta-Rice: A HDF5 Compression Plugin optimized for Digitized Detector Data

Delta-Rice is an HDF5 (The HDF Group et al., 2020) filter plugin that was developed to compress digitized detector signals recorded by the Nab experiment (Fry et al., 2019), a fundamental neutron physics experiment. This is a two-step process where incoming data is passed through a pre-processing filter and then compressed with Rice coding. A routine for determining the optimal pre-processing filter for a dataset is provided along with an example GPU deployment. When applied to data collected by the Nab data acquisition system, this method produced output files 29% their initial size, and was able to do so with an average read/write throughput in excess of 2 GB/s on a single CPU. Compared to the widely used Gzip compression routine, Delta-Rice reduces the file size by 33% more with over an order of magnitude increase in read/write throughput. Delta-Rice is available on CPU to users through the HDF5 library.

Correlations between asymmetric compression, burn amplification, and hot-spot velocities in inertial confinement fusion implosions

Here, this manuscript examines the correlations between the hot-spot velocity (an observable signature of residual kinetic energy), low-mode implosion asymmetries, and burn amplification in inertial confinement fusion implosions on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Using a combination of two-dimensional axis-symmetric and three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations coupled to neutronics, we find that for typical NIF implosions, the stagnation asymmetry multiplies the observed hot-spot velocity anywhere from 80% to 120%, while burn amplification always increases it. Additionally, we find stagnation asymmetry typically deflects the observed hot-spot flow. The two mechanisms (low-mode implosion asymmetries and burn amplification) can be decoupled, and application of a simple model to a database of cryogenic implosions on the NIF infers the total hot-spot velocity amplification. This finding modifies the interpretation of data collected from inertial confinement fusion experiments and impacts the magnitude and origin of low-mode asymmetries.

Gamma-ray imaging of inertial confinement fusion implosions reveals remaining ablator carbon distribution

The joint LANL/LLNL nuclear imaging team has acquired the first gamma-ray images of inertial confinement fusion implosions at the National Ignition Facility. The gamma-ray image provides crucial information to help characterize the inertially confined fuel and ablator assembly at stagnation, information that would be difficult to acquire from neutron or x-ray observations. Gamma imaging visualizes both gamma radiation emitted directly in deuterium–tritium (DT) fusion reactions as well as gamma rays produced when DT fusion neutrons scatter inelastically on carbon nuclei in the remaining ablator of the fuel capsule. The resulting image provides valuable information on the position and density of the remaining ablator and potential contamination of the hot spot—a powerful diagnostic window into the capsule assembly during burn.

Neutron imaging of inertial confinement fusion implosions

We review experimental neutron imaging of inertial confinement fusion sources, including the neutron imaging systems that have been used in our measurements at the National Ignition Facility. These systems allow measurements with 10 µm resolution for fusion deuterium–deuterium and deuterium–tritium neutron sources with mean radius up to 400 µm, including measurements of neutrons scattered to lower energy in the remaining cold fuel. These measurements are critical for understanding the fusion burn volume and the three-dimensional effects that can reduce the neutron yields.

First Precision Measurement of the Parity Violating Asymmetry in Cold Neutron Capture on 3 He

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton momentum with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction 3 He(n,p) 3 H, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active 3 He target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the least well-understood aspects of electroweak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory and potential model calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is A PV =[1.55±0.97(stat)±0.24(sys)]×10 -8 , which has the smallest uncertainty of any hadronic parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

First Observation of 𝑃-odd 𝛾 Asymmetry in Polarized Neutron Capture on Hydrogen

Here, we report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry 𝐴$^{𝑛⁢𝑝}_{𝛾}$ in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. 𝐴$^{𝑛⁢𝑝}_{𝛾}$ isolates the Δ⁢𝐼 =1, 3 𝑆 1 → 3 𝑃 1 component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured 𝐴$^{𝑛⁢𝑝}_{𝛾}$=[−3.0±1.4⁢(stat)±0.2⁢(syst)]×10 −8 , which implies a DDH weak 𝜋⁢𝑁⁢𝑁 coupling of ℎ$^1_𝜋$=[2.6±1.2⁢(stat)±0.2⁢(syst)]×10 −7 and a pionless EFT constant of 𝐶 3 𝑆 1 → 3 𝑃 1 /𝐶 0 =[−7.4±3.5⁢(stat)±0.5⁢(syst)]×10 −11 MeV −1 . We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and implications of the result.

Using Nab to determine correlations in unpolarized neutron decay

The Nab experiment will measure the ratio of the weak axial-vector and vector coupling constants λ = gA/gV with precision δλ/λ ~3 × 10 -4 and search for a Fierz term b F at a level Δb F < 10 -3 . The Nab detection system uses thick, large area, segmented silicon detectors to very precisely determine the decay proton’s time of flight and the decay electron’s energy in coincidence and reconstruct the correlation between the antineutrino and electron momenta. Excellent understanding of systematic effects affecting timing and energy reconstruction using this detection system are required. Here, to explore these effects, a series of ex situ studies have been undertaken, including a search for a Fierz term at a less sensitive level of Δb F < 10 -2 in the beta decay of 45 Ca using the UCNA spectrometer.
