Drivers of Thermal Instability of Catalytic Pyrolysis Oils During Hydrotreating and Co-Processing to Sustainable Fuels

This presentation goes over polymerization observed in CFPs driven by thermally labile oxygenates. Lower oxygen oils have improved stability and a few percent decrease in oxygen greatly improves stability. Further improvements could be realized via targeted catalytic development and further reduction in reactive species. High stability CFP will help enable refinery integration of biogenic carbon.

Accelerated Aging of Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil Using Carbonyl Titration: Laboratory Analytical Procedure (LAP)

This laboratory analytical procedure covers the accelerated aging of fast pyrolysis bio-oils. Bio-oils undergo reactions that result in physical and chemical changes over time. These changes typically result in an increase in molecular weight, decrease in some functional groups such as carbonyls, and an increase in viscosity; additionally, the aging process often leads to phase separation. Studies have shown that accelerated aging of bio-oils using this method closely mimics room temperature aging for long periods of time (over 3 years). This procedure has been developed for the accelerated aging of fast pyrolysis bio-oils only. Fast pyrolysis bio-oils are more reactive than other bio-oils (e.g., catalytic fast pyrolysis) and undergo aging much more rapidly. Therefore, this procedure should only be used for fast pyrolysis bio-oil samples.

Optimizing Process Conditions during Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Pine with Pt/TiO 2 —Improving the Viability of a Multiple-Fixed-Bed Configuration

Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) has been identified as a promising pathway for the production of renewable fuels and co-products. However, continued technology development is needed to increase process efficiency and reduce process costs. This report builds upon previous research in which a bifunctional metal–acid Pt/TiO 2 catalyst was utilized in a fixed-bed reactor operated with co-fed H 2 to improve product yield and reduce coke generation compared to conventional CFP methods. Here, we report further process optimization, in which we achieved similar CFP oil carbon efficiency (>35%) and CFP oil oxygen content (<20 wt %) to our previous report while reducing catalyst and equipment costs by increasing time-on-stream between regenerations by 40–95% and decreasing required regeneration time by more than a factor of 2. These process improvements were achieved by conducting parameter sweeps to determine optimum conditions for CFP and regeneration with key variables including pyrolysis temperature, catalytic upgrading temperature, hydrogen partial pressure, and regeneration oxygen concentration. Coupled with comprehensive oil analyses, these data provide foundational insight into the deoxygenation and coking chemistries for CFP under realistic process conditions while also advancing the technology through applied engineering.

Accelerated Aging of Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oils

Carbonyl content is a better metric for tracking aging than viscosity. Existing aging test (24 hours @ 80 °C) is too severe, and correlates to more room temperature aging than would realistically occur. New aging test proposed: 2 hours @ 80 °C correlates to 1-3 months of room temperature storage. Aging is slowed in cold storage, but still occurs.
