Fabrication of prepackaged superalloy honeycomb Thermal Protection System (TPS) panels

High temperature materials were surveyed, and Inconel 617 and titanium were selected for application to a honeycomb TPS configuration designed to withstand 2000 F. The configuration was analyzed both thermally and structurally. Component and full-sized panels were fabricated and tested to obtain data for comparison with analysis. Results verified the panel design. Twenty five panels were delivered to NASA Langley Research Center for additional evaluation.

Re-design and fabrication of titanium multi-wall Thermal Protection System (TPS) test panels

The Titanium Multi-wall Thermal Protection System (TIPS) panel was re-designed to incorporate Ti-6-2-4-2 outer sheets for the hot surface, ninety degree side closures for ease of construction and through panel fastness for ease of panel removal. Thermal and structural tests were performed to verify the design. Twenty-five panels were fabricated and delivered to NASA for evaluation at Langley Research Center and Johnson Space Center.

Fabrication of titanium multiwall Thermal Protection System (TPS) curved panel

A method is described for fabricating curved T1-6Al-4V multiwall panels having a single radius of curvature of 30.5 cm (12 inches). A panel 30.5 x 30.5 x 1.7 cm (12 x 12 x .688 inch) having 4 dimpled sheets, 5 undimpled sheets, and stepped side closures was designed, fabricated and delivered for evaluation. Tool design for skin and dimpled sheet forming are described as well as layup and liquid interface diffusion bonding.

Einstein imaging observations of clusters with a bimodal mass distribution

Einstein imaging observations of four X-ray clusters of galaxies characterized by a double X-ray surface brightness and thus mass distribution are presented. The clusters A98, A115, A1750 and SC 0627-54 were found to exhibit two enhancements in their X-ray surface brightness distributions in observations made with the Einstein Imaging Proportional Counter. Calculations of the probability that the clusters represent chance superpositions indicate that the double clusters are physically associated. The radial distributions of the components are inconsistent with those of single point sources, and have been used to derive cluster luminosities which are typical of rich clusters. Masses of the subclusters are also found to be typical of bound and virialized clusters with gas contributing 10%. Within the framework of the hierarchical theory of galactic clustering, the double clusters are suggested to represent an intermediate evolutionary stage before the merger of subclusters into a relaxed Coma-type cluster.

Einstein imaging observations of clusters of galaxies

X-ray observations suggest a broad division between clusters having a centrally-located, X-ray dominant galaxy characterized by a centrally-peaked X-ray emission, and clusters with a broader X-ray profile. Within these categories, such evolutionary indicators as X-ray temperature, vorticity dispersion, spiral fraction and central galaxy density may indicate the relative stages of evolution. X-ray imaging observations are presented for (1) the Virgo cluster, (2) other dynamically unevolved clusters, (3) double clusters which may be in an intermediate evolutionary stage, and (4) dynamically evolved clusters. The data are analyzed under the assumption of an isothermal X-ray gas which is gravitationally bound by galaxies and clusters.

Design and fabrication of titanium multi-wall Thermal Protection System (TPS) test panels

A titanium multiwall thermal protection system panel was designed. The panel is a nine sheet sandwich structure consisting of an upper and lower face sheet; four dimpled sheets, three septum sheets, and clips for attachment to a vehicle structure. An acceptable fabrication process was developed, and the panel design was verified through mechanical and thermal testing of component specimens. A design was completed which takes into consideration fabrication techniques, thermal properties, mechanical properties, and materials availability.
