First Determination of the Spin-Parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + , 0 Baryons

The Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) ( → D + ( 0 ) Λ ) π − decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined to be 3 / 2 + with a significance of more than 6.5 σ ( 3.5 σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) π − transitions are measured to be − 0.92 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ( − 0.92 ± 0.16 ± 0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξ c flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Observation of muonic Dalitz decays of chib mesons and precise spectroscopy of hidden-beauty states

The decays of the χb1 (1P), χb2 (1P), χb1 (2P) and χb2 (2P) mesons into the Υ(1S)μ + μ − final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1 . The newly observed decays together with the Υ(2S) → Υ(1S)π + π − and Υ(3S) → Υ(2S)π+π− decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states.

Transverse polarization measurement of Λ hyperons in pNe collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 68.4 GeV with the LHCb detector

A measurement of the transverse polarization of the Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons in p Ne fixed-target collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 68.4 GeV is presented using data collected by the LHCb detector. The polarization is studied using the decay Λ → p $π$ − together with its charge conjugated process, the integrated values measured are $P_Λ = 0.029 ± 0.019$ (stat) $±$ $0.012$ (syst), $P_{\bar{Λ}} = 0.003 ± 0.023$ (stat) $±$ $0.014$ (syst). Furthermore, the results are shown as a function of the Feynman x variable, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity of the hyperons, and are compared with previous measurements.

Search for the $ {B}_s^0$ → μ + μ – $\gamma$ decay

A search for the fully reconstructed ${B}_s^0$ → μ + μ – γ decay is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb –1 . No significant signal is found and upper limits on the branching fraction in intervals of the dimuon mass are set ${\displaystyle \begin{array}{cc}\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\gamma \right)<4.2\times {10}^{-8},& m\left({\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)\in \left[2{m}_{\mu },1.70\right]\textrm{GeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\gamma \right)<7.7\times {10}^{-8},&\ m\left({\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)\in \left[\textrm{1.70,2.88}\right]\textrm{GeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\gamma \right)<4.2\times {10}^{-8},& m\left({\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)\in \left[3.92,{m}_{B_s^0}\right]\textrm{GeV}/{c}^2,\end{array}}\\{}$ at 95% confidence level. Additionally, upper limits are set on the branching fraction in the [2m μ , 1.70] GeV/c 2 dimuon mass region excluding the contribution from the intermediate Φ(1020) meson, and in the region combining all dimuon-mass intervals.

Oceanography in the formal and informal classroom

The TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 ocean altimeter missions offer the educator in the middle school or informal education venue a unique opportunity for reinforcing ocean science studies. An educational poster from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales provide teachers and students a tool to examine topics such as the dynamics of ocean circulation, ocean research, and the oceans' role in climate.

Ocean circulation using altimetry

Our group has been very actively involved in promoting satellite altimetry as a unique tool for observing ocean circulation and its variability. TOPEX/POSEIDON is particularly interesting as it is optimized for this purpose. It will probably be the first instrument really capable of observing the seasonal and interannual variability of subtropical and polar gyres and the first to eventually document the corresponding variability of their heat flux transport. The studies of these phenomena require data of the best quality, unbiased extraction of the signal, mixing of these satellite data with in situ measurements, and assimilation of the whole set into a dynamic description of ocean circulation. Our group intends to develop responses to all these requirements. We will concentrate mostly on the circulation of the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans: This will be done in close connection with other groups involved in the study of circulation of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, in the altimetry measurements (in particular, those of the tidal issue), and in the techniques of data assimilation in ocean circulation models.

General circulation of the South Atlantic between 5 deg N and 35 deg S

The TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter will provide the temporal mean seal level. So, secondly, we propose to compute the difference between these two surfaces (mean sea level minus general circulation dynamic topography). The result will be an estimate of the marine geoid, which is time invariant for the 5-year period under consideration. If this geoid is precise enough, it will permit a description of seasonal variability of the large-scale surface circulation. If there happens to be enough float data, it may be possible to infer the first vertical modes of this variability. Thus the main goal of our investigation is to determine the 3-D general circulation of the South Atlantic and the large-scale seasonal fluctuations. This last objective, however, may be restricted to the western part of the South Atlantic because float deployments have been scheduled only in the Brasil basin.
