Impact of scintillation of transionospheric communications

Analyses of AGC analog data from the Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS) at VHF (136 MHz) have shown amplitude fluctuations in the signals received at several equatorial tracking sites operated by NASA. Coincident digital telemetry data, transmitted from SAS at 1 kbps, has also been analyzed. Errors in data are shown to increase markedly for nighttime satellite passes around the periods of the two equinoxes as compared to the errors observed during other periods. This paper establishes the qualitative and quantitative correlations between the ionospheric scintillation phenomenon and the occurrence of errors. Strong time and geographic cause and effect relationships are established by determining the statistical correlation between scintillation indices and bit error rates.

Burst-error characteristics of the equatorial transionospheric channel

Analyses of AGC analog data from the Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS) at VHF (136 MHz) have shown amplitude fluctuations in the signals received at several equatorial tracking sites operated by NASA. Errors in data are shown to increase markedly for nighttime satellite passes around the periods of the two equinoxes as compared to the errors observed during other periods. Qualitative and quantitative correlations are established between the ionospheric scintillation phenomenon and the occurrence of errors. Strong time and geographic cause-and-effect relationships are established by determining the statistical correlation between scintillation indices and bit error rates. Detailed analyses of the AGC fading statistics and the fine grain error statistics, such as the block-error distribution and the bit-error autocorrelation function, establish the strong correlation between deep fades and their effects on the burst error structure associated with the transionospheric channel and the communication receiver being employed.

Adaptive multibeam concepts for traffic management satellite systems.

The analysis of the performance of the various implementations of the simultaneous system in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has demonstrated that the use of adaptive system concepts in satellite traffic management systems can greatly improve the performance capabilities of these systems as compared to the corresponding performance capabilities of conventional nonadaptive satellite communications systems. It is considered that the techniques developed and analyzed represent a significant technological advance, and that the performance improvement achieved will generally outweigh the increased cost and implementation factors.

Very High-Frequency (VHF) ionospheric scintillation fading measurements at Lima, Peru

During the spring equinox of 1970, scintillating signals at VHF (136.4 MHz) were observed at Lima, Peru. The transmission originated from ATS 3 and was observed through a pair of antennas spaced 1200 feet apart on an east-west baseline. The empirical data were digitized, reduced, and analyzed. The results include amplitude probability density and distribution functions, time autocorrelation functions, cross correlation functions for the spaced antennas, and appropriate spectral density functions. Results show estimates of the statistics of the ground diffraction pattern to gain insight into gross ionospheric irregularity size, and irregularity velocity in the antenna planes.
