Deconvolution of diode-laser spectra

A new technique has been developed for deconvolving diode-laser spectra. This technique treats Doppler broadening, collisional broadening, and instrumental effects simultaneously. This technique is superior to previous deconvolution methods in the recovery of line-strength and transition-frequency information. A section of the ethane spectrum near 12 microns is used as an example. This new approach applies to any spectroscopy in which the instrumental resolution is narrower than actual linewidths.

The 12 micron band of ethane - High-resolution laboratory analysis with candidate lines for infrared heterodyne searches

Attention is given to the results of a laboratory study of the v9 band of ethane at 12 microns, using both high resolution Fourier transform and diode laser absorption spectroscopy. The analysis to which about 2000 transitions in this band have been subjected includes the normal rotational terms as well as the higher order effects of l-doubling, l-resonance, internal rotation, and a Coriolis resonance with the 3v4 state. A model is presented for the v9 band which is able to reproduce the observed features to an accuracy of better than 0.001/cm, and a list has been compiled for v9 transitions, occurring near C-14O2 laser lines, that are good candidates for laser heterodyne searches.

The 12 micron band of ethane: A spectral catalog from 765 cm(-1) to 900 cm(-1)

The high resolution laboratory absorption spectrum of the 12 micro band of ethane gas is studied. The data were obtained using the McMath Solar Telescope 1 meter Fourier Transform interferometer at Kitt Peak National Observatory and tunable diode laser spectrometers at the University of Tennessee and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. Over 200 individual vibration rotation transitions were analyzed taking into account many higher order effects including torsional splitting. Line positions were reproduced to better than 0.001/cm. Both ground and upper state molecular constants were determined in the analysis. The experimental details, the analysis procedures and the results are addressed. A list of ethane transitions occurring near (14)CO2 laser lines needed for heterodyne searches for C2H6 in extraterrestrial sources is also included. A spectral catalog of the ethane nu sub g fundamental from 765/cm to 900/cm is provided. A high dispersion (1/cm 12 in.) plot of both the Kitt Peak interferometric data and a simulated spectrum with Doppler limited resolution, a table of over 8500 calculated transitions listed quantum number assignments, frequencies and intensities are provided.

Anomalous /C-13/H4:/C-12/H4 line strengths in 2 nu 3

Anomalous intensity ratios between 2 nu 3 singlet lines of C-13 methane and C-12 methane are reported. Absolute strengths of the Q1, R0 and R1 singlets were measured for essentially pure samples of (C-13)H4 and (C-12)H4 at a resolution of 0.035 kaysers at pressures of 10 and 20 Torr, using a computer controlled grating spectrometer. Line strength ratios between the isotopic species are presented which demonstrate a dramatic effect of isotopic substitution on line strengths. If this effect can be observed in the 3 nu 3 vibration-rotation band of methane, which is widely used in planetary atmosphere studies, revision of the (C-12)H4/(C-13)H4 abundance ratios of the outer planets will be necessary.

Infrared detector Dewars - Increased LN2 hold time and vacuum jacket life spans

IR detector Dewars commonly suffer from shorter than desired LN2 hold times and insulation jacket vacuum corruption over relatively short time periods. In an attempt to solve this problem for a 9144 detector Dewar, small 1 liter/s appendage ion pumps were selected for continuous pumping of the vacuum jackets. This procedure extended LN2 hold times from 20 to 60 h and virtually eliminated vacuum jacket corruption. Thus the detector systems are usable continuously over periods of 6 months or more.

Absorption cell - A modified multiple-traversal device

A modified White-type multiple-transversal absorption cell used with a 5-m Littrow spectrometer is described. It can be introduced at a focus of the radiation beam without altering the beam configuration. The conventional White cell consists of three mirrors of equal focal length, with a distance of two focal lengths separating one of the mirrors from a mirror pair. The modification in the design consists of the addition of two mirrors at a slant placed behind the solitary mirror of the conventional configuration. The mirror arrangement reproduces the configuration of the exit beam for any number of transversals of the cell.

Carbon rod furnace infrared source

A carbon rod furnace infrared source has been built and has proven to be a reliable and trouble-free source despite the high rod temperature of 2500 K. The furnace offers several advantages over previous furnaces. These include an increase in usable rod length to 6.35 cm, extended rod life, and a fully automated power supply for the furnace. Construction and operational details are discussed.

The nu sub 2 band CHD3; ground state parameters for CHD3 from combination differences

The nu sub 2 fundamental band of CHD3, centered near 2143/cm, was recorded at a resolution of 0.015-0.25/cm. Analysis of ground state combination differences yielded well-determined values for the ground state molecular parameters for CHD3. These parameters were used in the determination of the alpha and beta molecular parameters for nu sub 2.
