Initialization experiments using a three-dimensional convective cloud model

The use of complex convection models to study cumulus and cumulonimubus formation and growth processes is examined. A model using a symmetric, buoyant bubble as the convection triggering device (Schlesinger, 1978, 1980) is used to compare results with a standard bubble perturbation and with highly elongated perturbations oriented along and across the low level shear vector. The ambient atmosphere used in the study is that of Simpson et al. (1982). The results suggest that perturbation geometry can cause significant differences in simulated cloud development.
