Spatially anisotropic 𝑆=1 square-lattice antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy realized in a Ni(II) pyrazine-𝑛,𝑛′-dioxide coordination polymer

The Ni(NCS) 2 (pyzdo) 2 coordination polymer is found to be an S = 1 spatially anisotropic square lattice with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. This conclusion is based upon considering in concert the experimental probes x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic-field-dependent heat capacity, muon-spin relaxation, neutron diffraction, neutron spectroscopy, and pulsed-field magnetization. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order develops at T N = 18.5 K. Although the samples are polycrystalline, there is an observable spin-flop transition and saturation of the magnetization at β‰ˆ80 T. Linear spin-wave theory yields spatially anisotropic exchanges within an AFM square lattice, J x =0.235 meV, J y =2.014 meV, and an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy D=βˆ’1.622 meV (after renormalization). The anisotropy of the exchanges is supported by density functional theory.

Beyond single tetrahedron physics of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁒Yb 2 ⁒Zn 5 ⁒O 11

Recently, a new class of quantum magnets, the so-called breathing pyrochlore spin systems, have attracted much attention due to their potential to host exotic emergent phenomena. Here, we present magnetometry, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, muon-spin relaxation, and polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁒Yb 2 ⁒Zn 5 ⁒O 11 . We interpret these results using a simplified toy model and provide insight into the low-energy physics of this system beyond the single tetrahedron physics proposed previously.

Ubiquitous spin freezing in the superconducting state of UTe 2

In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe 2 is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe 2 are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation (ΞΌSR) measurements on independently grown UTe 2 single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat (C) and the low-temperature upturn in C/T versus T. The omnipresent magnetic inhomogeneity has potential implications for experiments aimed at establishing the intrinsic low-temperature properties of UTe 2 .

Entanglement between a muon spin and $I>\frac{1}{2}$ nuclear spins

We report on the first example of quantum coherence between the spins of muons and quadrupolar nuclei. We observe this effect in vanadium intermetallic compounds which adopt the A15 crystal structure, and whose members include all technologically dominant superconductors. The entangled states are extremely sensitive to the local structural and electronic environments through the electric field gradient at the quadrupolar nuclei. This case-study demonstrates that positive muons can be used as a quantum sensing tool to probe also structural and charge related phenomena in materials, even in the absence of magnetic order.

Competing pairing interactions responsible for the large upper critical field in a stoichiometric iron-based superconductor CaKFe4As4

The upper critical field of multiband superconductors is an important quantity that can reveal details about the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here in this paper we experimentally map out the complete upper-critical-field phase diagram of a stoichiometric superconductor, CaKFe 4 As 4 , up to 90 T for different orientations of the magnetic field and at temperatures down to 4.2 K . The upper critical fields are extremely large, reaching values close to ~ 3T c at the lowest temperature, and the anisotropy decreases dramatically with temperature, leading to essentially isotropic superconductivity at 4.2 K . We find that the temperature dependence of the upper critical field can be well described by a two-band model in the clean limit with band-coupling parameters favoring intraband over interband interactions. The large Pauli paramagnetic effects together with the presence of the shallow bands is consistent with the stabilization of an FFLO state at low temperatures in this clean superconductor.

Enhancing easy-plane anisotropy in bespoke Ni(II) quantum magnets

We examine the crystal structures and magnetic properties of several S = 1 Ni(II) coordination compounds, molecules and polymers, that include the bridging ligands HF 2 - , A F 6 2- ( A = Ti, Zr) and pyrazine or non-bridging ligands F - , SiF 6 2- , glycine, H 2 O, 1-vinylimidazole, 4-methylpyrazole and 3-hydroxypyridine. Pseudo-octahedral NiN 4 F 2 , NiN 4 O 2 or NiN 4 OF cores consist of equatorial Ni-N bonds that are equal to or slightly longer than the axial Ni- L ax bonds. By design, the zero-field splitting ( D ) is large in these systems and, in the presence of substantial exchange interactions ( J ), can be difficult to discriminate from magnetometry measurements on powder samples. Thus, we relied on pulsed-field magnetization in those cases and employed electron-spin resonance (ESR) to confirm D when J ← D . The anisotropy of each compound was found to be easy-plane ( D > 0) and range from β‰ˆ 8–25 K. This work reveals a linear correlation between the ratio d (Ni- L ax )/ d (Ni-N eq ) and D although the ligand spectrochemical properties may play an important role. We assert that this relationship allows us to predict the type of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in tailored Ni(II) quantum magnets.
