Measurement of the τ -lepton mass with the Belle II experiment

We present a measurement of the τ-lepton mass using a sample of about 175 million $e^+$$e^-$ → ${{\tau}}^+{{\tau}}^-$ events collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+$$e^-$ collider at a center-of-mass energy of 10.579GeV. This sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $190$ $\mathrm{fb}$$^{-1}$. We use the kinematic edge of the ${{\tau}}$ pseudomass distribution in the decay ${{\tau}}^-$ → $π^-π^+π^-ν_τ$ and measure the ${{\tau}}$ mass to be $1777.09±0.08±0.11$ $\mathrm{MeV}$ $/{c^2}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is the most precise to date.

Study of the muon decay-in-flight in the τ - → μ - ν ¯ μ ν τ decay to measure the Michel parameter ξ '

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameter ξ' in the $\tau$ - → μ¯ $\overline{v}$ μ v $\tau$ decay using the full data sample of 988 fb -1 collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + ⁢e - collider. The method is based on the reconstruction of the μ¯ → e⁢¯$\overline{v}$ e v μ decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber and relies on the correlation between muon spin and its daughter electron momentum. We study the main sources of the background that can imitate the signal decay, such as kaon and pion decays-in-flight and charged particle scattering on the detector material. Highly efficient methods of their suppression are developed and applied to select 165 signal-candidate events. We obtain ξ' = 0.22±0.94±0.42 where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second one is systematic. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of ξ' = 1.

First Measurement of the Michel Parameter ξ ' in the τ - → μ - ν ¯ μ ν τ Decay at Belle

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter ξ' in the $\tau$ - →μ - ⁢ $\overline{v}$ μ ⁢v $\tau$ decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the $\tau$ - →μ -⁢ $\overline{v}$ μ v $\tau$ events with subsequent muon decay in flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of 988 fb -1 collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately 912×10 6 $\tau$ + ⁢$\tau$ - pairs. We measure ξ'=0.22±0.94⁢(stat)±0.42⁢(syst), which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of ξ' =1. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.

Novel method for the identification of the production flavor of neutral charmed mesons

We propose a new algorithm for the identification of the production flavor of neutral D mesons in the Belle II experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral D meson (signal D meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the e + e – →$c\bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other charm hadron produced in the event, as well as those possibly produced in association with the signal D meson. We develop the algorithm using simulation and calibrate it in data using decay modes that identify the flavor of the decaying neutral D meson. We use a data sample of e + e – collisions, corresponding to 362 fb –1 of integrated luminosity, collected by Belle II at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(4S) mass. The effective tagging efficiency in data is (47.91±0.07 (stat) ±0.51 (syst)) %, independent of the neutral-D-meson decay mode. This charm flavor tagger will approximately double the effective sample size of many CP-violation and charm-mixing measurements that so far have exclusively relied on neutral D mesons originating from D* ± decays. While developed for Belle II, the basic principles underlying the charm flavor tagger can be used in other experiments, including those at hadron colliders.

We present a study of the X⁡(3872) lineshape in the decay B →X(3872)⁢K →D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 ⁢K using a data sample of 772 ×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the Y⁡(4⁢S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e +⁢ e - collider. The peak near the threshold in the D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be m BW =3873.7⁢1$^{+0.56}_{-0.50⁢}$(stat) ±0.13⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 and Γ BW =5.2$^{+2.2}_{-1.5}$⁢(stat) ±0.4⁢(syst) MeV, respectively. The signal from B 0 decays is observed for the first time with 5.2σ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral B decays is measured to be $\mathscr{B}$(B 0 → X⁡(3872)⁢K 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$⁡(B + →X⁡(3872)⁢K + ) =1.34$^{+0.47}_{-0.40}$⁢(stat) $^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$⁢(syst). Measurement of the B 0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using hadronic decays reconstructed in 2019–2021 Belle II data

We measure the B0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using B 0 → D(*) – π + decays collected by the Belle II experiment in asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e – collisions produced by the SuperKEKB collider operating at the Υ⁡(4⁢S) resonance. We fit the decay-time distribution of signal decays, where the initial flavor is determined by identifying the flavor of the other B meson in the event. The results, based on 33000 signal decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 190 fb –1 , are τ B 0 = (1.499 ± 0.013 ± 0.008) ps, Δ⁢m d = (0.516 ± 0.008 ± 0.005) ps –1 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world-average values.

First Observation of Λπ + and Λπ - Signals near the $\bar{K}$N⁡(I=1) Mass Threshold in Λ$^+_c$ → Λ⁢π + ⁢π + π - Decay

Using the data sample of 980 fb -1 collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider, we present the results of an investigation of the Λ⁢π + and Λ⁢π - invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay Λ$^+_c$ → Λ⁢π + π + π - . We find a significant signal in each mass distribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the Λπ + (Λ⁢π - ) combination a mass of 1434.3 ± 0.6⁢(stat) ± 0.9⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 [1438.5 ± 0.9⁢(stat) ± 2.5⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 ], an intrinsic width of 11.5 ± 2.8⁢(stat) ± 5.3⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 [33.0 ± 7.5⁢(stat) ± 23.6⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 ] with a significance of 7.5⁢σ (6.2⁢σ). As these two signals are very close to the $\bar{K}N$ threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a $\bar{K}N$ cusp, and find that we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.

Measurement of lepton mass squared moments in B → X c ℓ ν ¯ ℓ decays with the Belle II experiment

We present measurements of the first to fourth moments of the lepton mass squared $q$ 2 of $B$ → $X_cℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ decays for $ℓ = e, μ$ and with $X_c$ a hadronic system containing a charm quark. These results use a sample of electron-positron collisions at the $Υ$($4S$) resonance corresponding to 62.8 fb -1 of integrated luminosity and collected by the Belle II 2 experiment in 2019 and 2020. To identify the $X_c$ system and reconstruct $q$ 2 , one of the $B$ mesons from an $Υ$($4S$) → $B\overline{B}$ decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode using a multivariate $B$ tagging algorithm. We report raw and central moments for $q$ 2 > 1.5 $GeV$ 2 =$c$ 4 up to $q$ 2 > 8.5 $GeV$ 2 =$c$ 4 , probing up to 77% of the accessible $B$ → $X_cℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ phase space. This is the first measurement of moments in the experimentally challenging range of [1.5; 2.5] $GeV$ 2 =$c$ 4 . The results can be used for a new determination of |$V_{cb}$| using inclusive $B$ → $X_cℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ decays.

Angular analysis of the low K + K – invariant mass enhancement in B + →K + K – π + decays

We study the decay B + →K + K – π + and investigate the angular distribution of K + K – pairs with invariant mass below 1.1 GeV / c 2 . This region exhibits both a strong enhancement in signal and very large direct CP violation. We construct a coherent sum model for the angular distribution of the S- and P-wave, and report the ratio of their amplitudes, the relative phase and the forward-backward asymmetry. We also report absolute differential branching fractions and direct CP asymmetry for the decay in bins of M K+K– and the differential branching fractions in bins of M K+π– . The results are based on a data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ$(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e – collider. The result favors the presence of S- and D-waves in low M K+K– region to the detriment of a P-wave.

Search for CP violation and measurement of branching fractions and decay asymmetry parameters for Λ$^+_c$ → Λ h + and Λ$^+_c$ → Σ 0 h + ( h = K, π )

The first results of direct CP asymmetry in two-body singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decays of charmed baryons are measured, A$^{dir}_{CP}(Λ^+_{c} → ΛK^{+})$ = +0.021 ± 0.026 ± 0.001 and A$^{dir}_{CP}(Λ^+_{c} → Σ^{0}K^{+})$ = +0.025 ± 0.054 ± 0.004. We also make the most precise measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters (α) for the four modes of interest and search for CP violation via the α-induced CP asymmetry (A$^α_{CP}$ ). We measure A$^α_{CP}$ ($Λ^+_{c} → ΛK^{+}$) = -0.023 ± 0.086 ± 0.071 and A$^α_{CP}$ ($Λ^+_{c} → Σ^{0}K^{+}$) = +0.08 ± 0.35 ± 0.14, which are the first A$^α_{CP}$ results for SCS decays of charmed baryons. We search for Λ -hyperon CP violation in $Λ^+_{c}$ → (Λ, Σ 0 )π + and find A$^α_{CP}$(Λ → pπ - ) = +0.013 ± 0.007 ± 0.011 . This is the first time that hyperon CP violation has been measured via Cabibbo-favored charm decays. No evidence of baryon CP violation is found. We also obtain the most precise branching fractions for two SCS Λ$^+_c$ decays, $\mathscr{B}$($Λ^+_{c} → ΛK^{+}$) = (6.57 ± 0.17 ± 0.11 ± 0.35) x 10 -4 and $\mathscr{B}$($Λ^+_{c} → Σ^{0}K^{+}$) = (3.58 ± 0.19 ±0.06 ±0.19) x 10 -4 . The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic, while the third uncertainties come from the uncertainties on the world average branching fractions of $Λ^+_{c}$ → (Λ, Σ 0 )π + .

Search for a Dark Photon and an Invisible Dark Higgs Boson in $μ^+ μ^–$ and Missing Energy Final States with the Belle II Experiment

The dark photon $\textit{A'}$ and the dark Higgs boson $\textit{h'}$ are hypothetical particles predicted in many dark sector models. We search for the simultaneous production of A' and h' in the dark Higgsstrahlung process $e^+e^– → A' h'$ with $A' → μ^+μ^–$ and $\textit{h'}$ invisible in electron-positron collisions at a center-of- mass energy of 10.58 GeV in data collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019. With an integrated luminosity of 8.34 fb –1 , we observe no evidence for signal. We obtain exclusion limits at 90% Bayesian credibility in the range of 1.7-5.0 fb on the cross section and in the range of 1.7 × 10 –8 -200 × 10 –8 on the effective coupling $ε^2 × α_D$ for the $\textit{A'}$ mass in the range of 4.0 GeV/$c^2 < M_{A'}$ < 9.7 GeV/$c^2$ and for the $\textit{h'}$ mass $M_{h'} < M_{A'}$, where $\textit{ε}$ is the mixing strength between the standard model and the dark photon and $α_D$ is the coupling of the dark photon to the dark Higgs boson. Our limits are the first in this mass range. Phtysuc

Measurement of the branching fractions for Cabibbo-suppressed decays D + → K + K - π + π 0 and D ( s ) + → K + π - π + π 0 at Belle

We measure these modes relative to the Cabibbo-favored modes D + → K - ⁢π + ⁢π + ⁢π 0 and D$^{+}_{s}$ → K + ⁢K -⁢ π + ⁢π 0 . Our results for the ratios of branching fractions are $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D + →K + ⁢K -⁢ π + ⁢π 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$⁡(D + → K - ⁢π + ⁢π + ⁢π 0 ) =(11.32±0.13±0.26)%, $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D + →K + π - ⁢π + ⁢π 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$(D + →K -⁢ π + ⁢π + ⁢π 0 ) =(1.68±0.11±0.03)%, and $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D$^{+}_{s}$ → K + ⁢π - π + ⁢π 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$⁡(D$^{+}_{s}$ → K + ⁢K - π + π 0 ) =(17.13±0.62±0.51)%, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Multiplying these results by world average values for $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D + → K - ⁢π + ⁢π + ⁢π 0 ) and $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D$^{+}_{s}$ → K + ⁢K - π + π 0 ) yields $\mathscr{B}$( + →K + ⁢K -⁢ π + ⁢π 0 ) = (7.08±0.08±0.16±0.20)×10 -3 , $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D + → K +⁢ π - π + ⁢π 0 ) =(1.05±0.07±0.02±0.03)×10 -3 , and $\mathscr{B}$⁡(D$^{+}_{s}$ → K + ⁢π - π + ⁢π 0 ) =(9.44±0.34±0.28±0.32)×10 -3 , where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the normalization mode.
