Non-steady differential rotation is one of the main characteristics of the buoyancy-driven flow within the Earth's liquid metallic outer core that generates the main geomagnetic field by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) dynamo action. Concomitant fluctuations in angular momentum transfer both within the core and between the core and the overlying 'solid' mantle are investigated by assuming that average departures from `isorotation' on coaxial cylindrical surfaces are negligibly small.

The full nonlinear Kalman filter sequential algorithm is, in theory, well-suited to the four-dimensional data assimilation problem in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic problems. However, it was later discovered that this algorithm can be very sensitive to computer roundoff, and that results may cease to be meaningful as time advances. Implementations of a modified Kalman filter are given.
The 1982-83 El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event was accompanied by the largest interannual variation in the Earth's rotation rate on record.
The UV spectra between 1200 and 3000 A of stars in the young galactic cluster NGC 6530 and the surrounding association are studied. From the UBV colors and empirical as well as theoretical calibrations, the T(eff) and L for those stars which follow a sequence in the H-R diagram corresponding to the main sequence are determined. From a comparison with theoretical evolutionary tracks, the age of the cluster is estimated to be 5 + or - 2 x 10 to the 6th yr, with a very small scatter for the different stars. The UV extinction is determined for the stars from a comparison of theoretical model energy distributions for the stellar T(eff)s and the observed energy distributions. The stellar wind lines are studied, and strong stellar winds are found for bolometric magnetidues less than -8.
Some properties are derived for the solutions of the variational equations of a class of dynamical systems. It is shown that under rather general conditions, the matrix of the linearized Lagrangian equations of motion have an important property for which the word 'skew-symplectic' has been introduced. It is also shown that the fundamental matrix of solutions is 'symplectic', the word symplectic being used here in a more general sense than in the classical literature. Two consequences of the symplectic property are that the fundamental matrix is easily invertible and that the eigenvalues appear in reciprocal pairs. The effect of coordinate transformations is also analyzed; in particular, the change from Lagrangian to canonical systems.
The article contains a numerical study of periodic solutions of the Planar General Three-Body Problem. Several new periodic solutions have been discovered and are described. In particular, there is a continuous family with variable masses, extending all the way from the elliptic restricted problem to the general problem with three equal masses. All our examples have special symmetry properties which are described in detail. Finally we also suggest some important applications to the natural satellites of the solar system.
