Electrochemical Oxidation of Seawater for Renewable Energy Generation and Storage in Coastal Areas

In this work, we demonstrated how the Clean Sustainable Electrochemical Treatment process can be used to process seawater while simultaneously generating molecular hydrogen. The specific goal of this project is to (1) demonstrate selective removal of chemical oxygen demand over the oxygen and chlorine evolution reactions, (2) optimize electrode composition to improve electrochemical performance, and (3) demonstrate long-term (>100 h) stability experiments.

Catalytic Conversion of Biogenic and Synthetic Polymers into Carbon-Negative and -Neutral Chemicals and Fuels

We investigated a technology that enables the distributed decomposition of biogenic (lignin, cellulose) and synthetic (plastic) polymers into renewable or low-carbon-emission chemicals and fuel intermediates that can substitute fossil hydrocarbons for energy, chemical, and fuel production. The specific goal of this project is to (1) selectively convert biogenic polymers such as lignin and synthetic polymers such as polyethylene into hydrocarbons via electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes, and (2) optimize (electro)catalyst composition and reaction conditions to mitigate deactivation and control product selectivity.

Low-Temperature Electrochemical Wastewater Oxidation

Here, we demonstrated the Clean Sustainable Electrochemical Treatment (CleanSET) process that enables the distributed clean-up of biomass-derived wastewater while simultaneously generating hydrogen (H 2 ). The specific goal of this project is to 1) demonstrate the selective removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total carbon (TC), and total nitrogen (TN) of different wastewaters, 2) optimize the electrode composition to improve electrochemical performance, and 3) perform a high-level techno-economic analysis to obtain levelized costs of disposal (LCOD) .
