Electronic structure and lattice dynamics of 1⁢𝑇−VSe 2 : Origin of the three-dimensional charge density wave

To characterize in detail the charge density wave (CDW) transition of 1⁢𝑇−VSe 2 , its electronic structure and lattice dynamics are comprehensively studied by means of x-ray diffraction, muon spectroscopy, angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering, and state-of-the-art first-principles density functional theory calculations. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering does not show any resonant enhancement at either V or Se, indicating that the CDW peak at the 𝐾 edges describes a purely structural modulation of the electronic ordering. ARPES experiments identify (i) a pseudogap at 𝑇 > 𝑇⁢ CDW , which leads to a depletion of the density of states in the ML-M'L' plane at 𝑇 < 𝑇⁢ CDW , and (ii) anomalies in the electronic dispersion reflecting a sizable impact of phonons on it. A diffuse scattering precursor, characteristic of soft phonons, is observed at room temperature (RT) and leads to the full collapse of the low-energy phonon (𝜔 1 ) with propagation vector (0.25 0 −0.3) r.l.u. Here, we show that the frequency and linewidth of this mode are anisotropic in momentum space, reflecting the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI), hence demonstrating that the origin of the CDW is, to a much larger extent, due to the momentum dependent EPI with a small contribution from nesting. The pressure dependence of the 𝜔 1 soft mode remains nearly constant up to 13 GPa at RT, with only a modest softening before the transition to the high-pressure monoclinic C2/m phase. The wide set of experimental data is well captured by our state-of-the art first-principles anharmonic calculations with the inclusion of van der Waals corrections in the exchange-correlation functional. The comprehensive description of the electronic and dynamical properties of VSe 2 reported here adds important pieces of information to the understanding of the electronic modulations in the family of transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Softening of a flat phonon mode in the kagome ScV 6 Sn 6

Geometrically frustrated kagome lattices are raising as novel platforms to engineer correlated topological electron flat bands that are prominent to electronic instabilities. Here, we demonstrate a phonon softening at the k z = π plane in ScV 6 Sn 6 . The low energy longitudinal phonon collapses at ~98 K and q = $\tfrac{1}{3}$ $\tfrac{1}{3}$ $\tfrac{1}{2}$ due to the electron-phonon interaction, without the emergence of long-range charge order which sets in at a different propagation vector q CDW = $\tfrac{1}{3}$ $\tfrac{1}{3}$ $\tfrac{1}{3}$. Theoretical calculations corroborate the experimental finding to indicate that the leading instability is located at $\tfrac{1}{3}$ $\tfrac{1}{3}$ $\tfrac{1}{2}$ of a rather flat mode. We relate the phonon renormalization to the orbital-resolved susceptibility of the trigonal Sn atoms and explain the approximately flat phonon dispersion. Our data report the first example of the collapse of a kagome bosonic mode and promote the 166 compounds of kagomes as primary candidates to explore correlated flat phonon-topological flat electron physics.

Order-disorder charge density wave instability in the kagome metal (Cs,Rb)V 3 Sb 5

The origin of the charge density wave phases in the kagome metal compound AV 3 Sb 5 is still under great scrutiny. Here, we combine diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify a 3-dimensional precursor of the charge order at the L point that condenses into a CDW through a first order phase transition. The quasi-elastic critical scattering indicates that the dominant contribution to the diffuse precursor is the elastic central peak without phonon softening. However, the inelastic spectra show a small broadening of the Einstein-type phonon mode on approaching T CDW . Our results point to the situation where the Fermi surface instability at the L point is of order-disorder type with critical growth of quasi-static domains. The experimental data indicate that the CDW consists on an alternating Star of David and trihexagonal distortions and its dynamics goes beyond the classical weak-coupling scenario and is discussed within strong-electron phonon coupling and non-adiabatic models.

Strain wave pathway to semiconductor-to-metal transition revealed by time-resolved X-ray powder diffraction

One of the main challenges in ultrafast material science is to trigger phase transitions with short pulses of light. Here we show how strain waves, launched by electronic and structural precursor phenomena, determine a coherent macroscopic transformation pathway for the semiconducting-to-metal transition in bistable Ti 3 O 5 nanocrystals. Employing femtosecond powder X-ray diffraction, we measure the lattice deformation in the phase transition as a function of time. We monitor the early intra-cell distortion around the light absorbing metal dimer and the long range deformations governed by acoustic waves propagating from the laser-exposed Ti 3 O 5 surface. We developed a simplified elastic model demonstrating that picosecond switching in nanocrystals happens concomitantly with the propagating acoustic wavefront, several decades faster than thermal processes governed by heat diffusion.
