PaRSEC: Scalability, flexibility, and hybrid architecture support for task-based applications in ECP

This paper highlights the most significant enhancements made to PaRSEC, a scalable task-based runtime system designed for hybrid machines, during the Exascale Computing Project (ECP). The enhancements focus on expanding the capabilities of PaRSEC to address the evolving landscape of parallel computing. Notable achievements include the integration of support for three major types of accelerators (NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs), the refinement and increased flexibility of the communication subsystem, and the introduction of new programming interfaces tailored for irregular applications. Additionally, the project resulted in the development of powerful debugging and performance analysis tools aimed at assisting users in understanding and optimizing their applications. We present a comprehensive demonstration of these advancements through a series of benchmarks and applications within ECP and beyond, thereby showcasing the enhanced capabilities of PaRSEC across the diverse architectures within the ECP, providing valuable insights into the runtime system’s adaptability and performance across varied computing environments.

Taking the MPI standard and the open MPI library to exascale

The Open MPI for Exascale (OMPI-X) project was one of two in the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) focused on advancing the MPI ecosystem. The OMPI-X team worked with other MPI Forum members to champion several important features for inclusion in the MPI 4.0, 4.1, and upcoming 5.0 MPI standard versions, in support of the needs of exascale applications and systems. The team also worked with the larger Open MPI community to bring implementations of these new features and other enhancements into Open MPI, one of the leading open-source implementations of the MPI interface. Here, this paper describes the motivation for the work of the OMPI-X project in the context of exascale computing needs, the nature of the resulting new capabilities in the MPI standard, and how they were implemented in the Open MPI library. Features include improved support for “MPI + X” programming models through partitioned communications and support for user-level threading, sessions, fault tolerance through the user-level fault mitigation (ULFM) and Reinit models, and other features. We also discuss enhancements to Open MPI providing improved performance and scalability for existing features, such as collective operations, one-sided operations, support for the Slingshot-11 interconnect of the initial exascale systems, and how the OMPI-X team worked to improve quality assurance for the Open MPI library, particularly on platforms of interest to the Department of Energy community.

DeepFreeze: Towards Scalable Asynchronous Checkpointing of Deep Learning Models

In the age of big data, deep learning has emerged as a powerful tool to extract insight and exploit its value, both in industry and scientific applications. One common pattern emerging in such applications is frequent checkpointing of the state of the learning model during training, needed in a variety of scenarios: analysis of intermediate states to explain features and correlations with training data, exploration strategies involving alternative models that share a common ancestor, knowledge transfer, resilience, etc. However, with increasing size of the learning models and popularity of distributed data-parallel training approaches, simple checkpointing techniques used so far face several limitations: low serialization performance, blocking I/O, stragglers due to the fact that only a single process is involved in checkpointing. This paper proposes a checkpointing technique specifically designed to address the aforementioned limitations, introducing efficient asynchronous techniques to hide the overhead of serialization and I/O, and distribute the load over all participating processes. Experiments with two deep learning applications (CANDLE and ResNet) on a pre-Exascale HPC platform (Theta) shows significant improvement over state-of-art, both in terms of checkpointing duration and runtime overhead.

A survey of MPI usage in the US exascale computing project

The Exascale Computing Project (ECP) is currently the primary effort in the United States focused on developing “exascale” levels of computing capabilities, including hardware, software, and applications. In order to obtain a more thorough understanding of how the software projects under the ECP are using, and planning to use the Message Passing Interface (MPI), and help guide the work of our own project within the ECP, we created a survey. Of the 97 ECP projects active at the time the survey was distributed, we received 77 responses, 56 of which reported that their projects were using MPI. Furthermore, this paper reports the results of that survey for the benefit of the broader community of MPI developers.
