High-Strength Glass for Solar Applications

Technology for strengthening thin sections reviewed. Report reviews technology of high-strength glass for such solar applications as heat collectors, reflectors, and photovoltaic arrays. Discusses most feasible methods - heat strengthening and chemical strengthening of increasing strength of glass for solar-energy use. Also estimates cost and availability of high-strength glass and considers physical characteristics, amenability to back-silvering, and effects of atmospheric contamination.

Data gathered on key design parameters. Report discusses study of electrical and mechanical properties of irradiated polymer dielectric materials. Data compiled for use by designers of high-energy-density capacitors that operate in presence of ionizing radiation. Study focused on polycarbonates, polyetheretherketones, polymethylpentenes, polyimides (including polyetherimide), polyolefins, polysulfones (including polyethersulfone and polyphenylsulfone), and polyvinylidene fluorides.

Reflective Shields for Artificial Satellites

Report proposes reflective shield that protects spacecraft from radiant energy. Also gives some protection against particle beams and cosmic rays. Conceptual shield essentially advanced version of decorative multifaceted mirror balls often hung over dance floors. Mirror facets disperse radiant energy in many directions.

Responses of Dielectrics to Space Radiation

Nature, extent, and possible prevention of radiation damage discussed. Report summarizes likely effects of high-energy radiation in outer space on variety of commercially-available dielectric materials used in spacecraft. Effects reported on basis of recent Galileo tests, unpublished tests involving proton or electron irradiation, and published information. In general, organic materials with carbon or inorganic fillers most resistant to radiation.

Effects of Radiation on Coatings

Tests help to insure reliability in hostile environment. Tests of radiation damage to materials used in outer coverings of spacecraft described in 25-page report. Materials exposed to ionizing radiation then examined for degradation of desirable mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. Experimental results and test methods applicable to aircraft, scientific instrumentation, and other equipment subject to ionizing radiation, electrostatic discharge, or both.

Spacecraft dielectric material properties and spacecraft charging

The physics of spacecraft charging is reviewed, and criteria for selecting and testing semiinsulating polymers (SIPs) to avoid charging are discussed and illustrated. Chapters are devoted to the required properties of dielectric materials, the charging process, discharge-pulse phenomena, design for minimum pulse size, design to prevent pulses, conduction in polymers, evaluation of SIPs that might prevent spacecraft charging, and the general response of dielectrics to space radiation. SIPs characterized include polyimides, fluorocarbons, thermoplastic polyesters, poly(alkanes), vinyl polymers and acrylates, polymers containing phthalocyanine, polyacene quinones, coordination polymers containing metal ions, conjugated-backbone polymers, and 'metallic' conducting polymers. Tables summarizing the results of SIP radiation tests (such as those performed for the NASA Galileo Project) are included.

Space environmental effects on adhesives for the Galileo spacecraft

Requirements for the adhesives used on the Galileo Jovian probe are discussed, and the results of mechanical and radiation experiments for their qualification are presented. The five types of adhesives used for the Wide Field Camera, SXA Antenna, temperature control louvers, and structural bonds all passed the proton and electron tests and the low temperature radiation tests. Possible bond improvements through techniques including gamma ray radiation exposure and ion implantation are also considered.

Radiation thresholds for synthetic elastomers

Synthetic elastomeric materials, when used in systems that must operate in radiation fields, frequently comprise the weakest link for materials. The results of a comprehensive tabulation of mechanical response data are summarized in graphical form useful to designers. General information on elastomers is given along with electrical, outgassing and thermal response data.

Synthetic Organic Materials in Nuclear Powerplants

Report aids plant designers and qualification engineers in ensuring that organic materials in nuclear powerplants will perform satisfactorily in such safety-related equipment as insulation on motor windings, pump diaphragms, motor and pump lubricants, and pump seals and gaskets. Report provides information for service that may include both mild and harsh nuclear environments.

Degradation of Dielectrics in Space

Effects of radiation (principally, electrons and protons) on dielectric materials summarized in report. Report based on radiation tests of optical coatings, temperature-control coatings, adhesives, radomes, thermal insulators, and light-control surfaces. Materials are primarily polymers and metal/organic coatings.

Environmental Degradation of Solar Reflectors

Report presents results of study of atmospheric degradation of large solar reflectors for power generators. Three general types of reflective surfaces investigated. Report also describes computer buildup and removal (by rain and dew) of contamination from reflectors. Data used to determine effects of soil buildup and best method and frequency of washing at various geographic locations.

Dielectric material in the space environment

The irradiation encountered in space environments causes high insulation materials to discharge, either through electrical breakdown or surface voltage effect mechanisms. Attention is presently given to polymers which, serving as 'leaky' insulators, avoid this problem by means of conduction mechanisms that are acceptable in space applications. The class of conductive polymers encompasses polyvinylcarbazole, polyacrylonitrile, Kapton, and polythiazil. A testing procedure useful in the qualification of such polymers is outlined.

Radiation effects response data for synthetic organic insulation and dielectrics

Existing radiation response data for 130 materials of the synthetic organic insulation and dielectric class are analyzed, and thresholds and 25-percent change dose levels for these materials are presented. Both the lowest reported threshold dose (LTD) and the 25-percent change dose level are found to vary widely among the different insulators (used as spacecraft components). The LTD is tabulated to indicate the levels where radiation effects become apparent. These level are of use in setting a lower limit where changes can be expected, and could be used to exempt synthetic insulation and dielectrics from radiation considerations when the environments are substantially below this limit. Cautions to be observed in applying the data to current problems are presented.

Radiation effects measurements on spacecraft electrostatic discharge tapes, thermal blankets and thermooptical coatings

Selective results are presented of laboratory radiation tests of metallic foil tapes, thermal blankets, and thermooptical coatings undertaken as part of the development and qualification of materials for the Galileo spacecraft. Of the two metallic foil tapes used for electrical continuity, the adhesive used on the aluminum embossed foil was superior to the copper embossed foil when exposed to simulated Jovian electrons. Proton-irradiation tests performed on a number of thermal blanket samples showed that black polyester on Kapton proved to be a lower weight loss (i.e., outgassing) material than Fluorglas. In addition, preliminary results concerning the response of thermooptical coatings to simulated Jovian electrons show that the ITO-coated polyester over a Kapton surface gave the lowest absorptance.
