Search for the decay B 0 → γ γ using Belle and Belle II data

We report the result of a search for the rare decay B 0 → γ γ using a combined dataset of 753 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment from decays of the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance produced in e + e − collisions. A simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields 11.0 − 5.5 + 6.5 signal events, corresponding to a 2.5 σ significance. We determine the branching fraction B ( B 0 → γ γ ) = ( 3.7 − 1.8 + 2.2 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 8 and set a 90% credibility level upper limit of B ( B 0 → γ γ ) < 6.4 × 10 − 8 . Measurements of the Branching Fraction, Polarization, and C P Asymmetry for the Decay B 0 → ω ω

We present a comprehensive study of B 0 → ω ω decays using 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. This process is a suppressed charmless decay into two vector mesons and can exhibit interesting polarization and C P violation. The decay is observed for the first time with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction B = ( 1.53 ± 0.29 ± 0.17 ) × 10 − 6 , a fraction of longitudinal polarization f L = 0.87 ± 0.13 ± 0.13 , and a time-integrated C P asymmetry A C P = − 0.44 ± 0.43 ± 0.11 , where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of B 0 → ω ω and the first measurements of f L and A C P for this decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for Baryon-Number-Violating Processes in B − Decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − Final State

We report the results of the first search for B − decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − final state using 711 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. The results are interpreted in terms of both direct baryon-number-violating B − decay and Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations which follow the standard model decay B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − . New graph-neural-network flavor tagger for Belle II and measurement of sin 2⁢𝜙 1 in 𝐵 0 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays

We present GFlaT, a new algorithm that uses a graph-neural-network to determine the flavor of neutral 𝐵 mesons produced in ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) decays. It improves previous algorithms by using the information from all charged final-state particles and the relations between them. We evaluate its performance using 𝐵 decays to flavor-specific hadronic final states reconstructed in a 362 fb −1 sample of electron-positron collisions collected at the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We achieve an effective tagging efficiency of (37.40 ± 0.43 ± 0.36%), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, which is 18% better than the previous Belle II algorithm. Demonstrating the algorithm, we use 𝐵 0 →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays to measure the mixing-induced and direct 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation parameters, 𝑆 = (0.724 ± 0.035 ± 0.009) and 𝐶 = (−0.035 ± 0.026 ± 0.029).

Study of Υ(10753) decays to π+π−Υ(nS) final states at Belle II

Abstract We present an analysis of the processe + e − →π + π − Υ(nS) (wheren= 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of theπ + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of thee + e − →π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to theπ + π − Υ(1S) andπ + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays toπ + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in theπ + π − Υ(1S,2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the$$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ π ∓ Z b ± orf 0 (980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for thee + e − →π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.

Measurement of C P asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays at Belle II

We report a measurement of decay-time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays. We use 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. We reconstruct 220 signal events and extract the C P -violating parameters S and C from a fit to the distribution of the decay-time difference between the two B mesons. The resulting confidence region is consistent with previous measurements in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 and B 0 → ( c c ¯ ) K 0 decays and with predictions based on the standard model. Search for a μ + μ − resonance in four-muon final states at Belle II

We report on a search for a resonance X decaying to a pair of muons in e + e − → μ + μ − X events in the 0.212 – 9.000 GeV / c 2 mass range, using 178 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of X beyond the standard model: a Z ′ vector boson in the L μ − L τ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV / c 2 , the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for a heavy neutral lepton that mixes predominantly with the tau neutrino

We report a search for a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) that mixes predominantly with ν τ . The search utilizes data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + e − collider. The data sample was collected at and just below the center-of-mass energies of the ϒ ( 4 S ) and ϒ ( 5 S ) resonances and has an integrated luminosity of 915 fb − 1 , corresponding to ( 836 ± 12 ) × 10 6 e + e − → τ + τ − events. We search for production of the HNL (denoted N ) in the decay τ − → π − N followed by its decay via N → μ + μ − ν τ . The search focuses on the parameter-space region in which the HNL is long-lived, so that the μ + μ − originate from a common vertex that is significantly displaced from the collision point of the KEKB beams. Consistent with the expected background yield, one event is observed in the data sample after application of all the event-selection criteria. We report limits on the mixing parameter of the HNL with the τ neutrino as a function of the HNL mass. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Evidence for B + → K + ν ν ¯ decays

We search for the rare decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ in a 362 fb − 1 sample of electron-positron collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying B meson in ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal B candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying B meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the B + → K + ν ν ¯ branching fraction of [ 2.7 ± 0.5 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 and [ 1.1 − 0.8 + 0.9 ( stat ) − 0.5 + 0.8 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ to be [ 2.3 ± 0.5 ( stat ) − 0.4 + 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

First Measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) as an Inclusive Test of the b → c τ ν Anomaly

We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ℓ ) ≡ B ( B → X τ ν ) / B ( B → X ℓ ν ) , where ℓ indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb − 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ℓ ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) . Search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at s = 10.745 GeV

We search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at a center-of-mass energy of 10.745 GeV, which is close to the peak of the ϒ ( 10753 ) state. We use data collected by the Belle II experiment during a special run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.8 fb − 1 . We reconstruct ω → π + π − π 0 decays and use the ω meson’s recoil mass to search for the signals. We do not find evidence for either process, and set upper limits on the corresponding Born-level cross sections of 2.5 pb and 7.8 pb, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. Search for the semileptonic decays Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 ℓ + ℓ − at Belle

Using the full data sample of 980 fb − 1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider, we report the results of the first search for the rare semileptonic decays Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 ℓ + ℓ − ( ℓ = e or μ ). No significant signals are observed in the Ξ 0 ℓ + ℓ − invariant-mass distributions. Taking the decay Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + as the normalization mode, we report 90% credibility upper limits on the branching fraction ratios B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 e + e − ) / B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + ) < 6.7 × 10 − 3 and B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 μ + μ − ) / B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + ) < 4.3 × 10 − 3 based on the phase-space assumption for signal decays. Search for a dark leptophilic scalar produced in association with τ + τ − pair in e + e − annihilation at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV

A dark leptophilic scalar ( ϕ L ) is a hypothetical particle that couples only to leptons rather than quarks. We report on a search for ϕ L in the e + e − → τ + τ − ϕ L , ϕ L → ℓ + ℓ − ( ℓ = e , μ ) process using 626 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle experiment near the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance. We validate the backgrounds with multiple control regions in data, using a novel multiclass multivariate event classifier. In absence of a signal, we quote upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the coupling between ϕ L and leptons. Our bounds, obtained in a blinded approach, are 19% more constraining than the previous limits, averaged over the mass range 0.04 ≤ m ϕ L ≤ 6.5 GeV . We exclude the parameter space below 4 GeV favored by measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
