Up and down quark structure of the proton

We report an improved measurement of the valence u and d quark distributions from the forward-backward asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process using 8.6 fb − 1 of data collected with the D0 detector in p p ¯ collisions at s = 1.96 . This analysis provides the values of new structure parameters that are directly related to the valence up and down quark distributions in the proton. In other experimental results measuring the quark content of the proton, d quark contributions are mixed with those from other quark flavors. In this measurement, the u and d quark contributions are separately extracted by applying a factorization of the QCD and electroweak portions of the forward-backward asymmetry. Excitonic and deep-level emission from N- and Al-polar homoepitaxial AlN grown by molecular beam epitaxy

Using low-temperature cathodoluminescence spectroscopy, we study the properties of N- and Al-polar AlN layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on bulk AlN{0001}. Compared with the bulk AlN substrate, layers of both polarities feature a suppression of deep-level luminescence, a total absence of the prevalent donor with an exciton binding energy of 28 meV, and a much increased intensity of the emission from free excitons. The dominant donor in these layers is characterized by an associated exciton binding energy of 13 meV. The observation of excited exciton states up to the exciton continuum allows us to directly extract the Γ 5 free exciton binding energy of 57 meV.

Study of the normalized transverse momentum distribution of W bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV

We present a study of the normalized transverse momentum distribution of W bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.35 fb -1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The measurement focuses on the transverse momentum region below 15 GeV, which is of special interest for electroweak precision measurements; it relies on the same detector calibration methods which were used for the precision measurement of the W boson mass. The measured distribution is compared to different QCD predictions and a procedure is given to allow the comparison of any further theoretical models to the D0 data.

Results of scatterometer systems analysis for NASA/MSC Earth Observation Sensor Evaluation Program.

Radar scatterometers have applications in the NASA/MSC Earth Observation Aircraft Program. Over a period of several years, several missions have been flown over both land and ocean. In this paper a system evaluation of the NASA/MSC 13.3-GHz Scatterometer System is presented. The effects of phase error between the Scatterometer channels, antenna pattern deviations, aircraft attitude deviations, environmental changes, and other related factors such as processing errors, system repeatability, and propeller modulation, were established. Furthermore, the reduction in system errors and calibration improvement was investigated by taking into account these parameter deviations. Typical scatterometer data samples are presented.
