Optical and X-ray observations of 2S 0921-630

The present investigation is concerned with photometric and spectroscopic measurements of 2S 0921-630 covering the years 1975-82. The X-ray source 2S 0921-630 was discovered by Li et al. (1978) and identified with an approximately 17th magnitude star showing He II 4686 A and H-beta in emission. Attention is given to photoelectric photometry, photographic photometry, aspects of periodic behavior, spectroscopy, radial velocity measurements and equivalent widths, and X-ray observations. It is found that the radial velocity data confirm the 9-day period previously suggested for the system and exclude alternative periods of 17.9 and 7.7 days.

Phase resolved optical spectroscopy of the compact X-ray binary 2A1822-371

The optical, X-ray, and ultraviolet emissions of the X-ray system 2A1822-371 are modulated with a period of 5.57 hr. The 5.57 hr modulation is believed to reflect orbital motion about a mass donating companion star. The modulation at high energies is caused by the combined effects of an occultation by the companion and by a bulge on the accretion disk. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the study of 2A1822-371, taking into account medium resolution optical spectroscopy of the system covering the 5.57 hr cycle. Broad shallow absorption lines are observed in the optical spectrum of 2A1822-371. These lines are similar to the rotationally broadened lines which are found in the spectra of disk accreting cataclysmic variables. Their presence in 2A1822-371 is, therefore, strong confirmation that it is a disk accreting star. The He II 4686 A and H-alpha emission lines have a breadth comparable to the absorption lines at all phases in the 5.57 hr cycle.

Coordinated X-ray, ultraviolet and optical observations of AM Herculis, U Geminorum, and SS Cygni

Simultaneous and quasi-simultaneous optical, UV and X-ray observations of the accreting degenerate dwarf stars AM Herculis, U Geminorum and SS Cygni are reported. The observations were obtained in March 1979, by instruments on board the Einstein Observatory and the IUE satellite, and optical properties were monitored on the ground. AM Her was found to be in a high state at the time of the observations, while SS Cyg and U Gem appeared to be in the optical low state. The presence of a strong UV excess is found in SS Cyg, U Gem and AM Her, which most likely originates from the boundary of the accretion disk in U Gem. The observed excess, with a blackbody component greater than 10 eV, is noted to be inconsistent with standard accretion disk and column models. It is suggested that nuclear burning at the surface of the white dwarf may be responsible for the excess UV flux in the three systems, with differences in spectral distributions resulting from different levels of magnetic field intensity and accretion rate.

X-ray observations of the OAO1653-40 field

The region of sky containing OAO1653-40 have been observed simultaneously with the Einstein and Copernicus satellites in 1979 August. A best position of RA = 254.318 degrees, Dec = -41.577 degrees (1950) and a period of 38.019 + or - 0.009 sec were obtained for the X-ray pulsar discovered by White and Pravdo. The X-ray spectrum shows considerable photoelectric absorption with an equivalent hydrogen column density of 2.3 x 10 to the 23rd atom per sq cm. An upper limit to any 0.5-3.0 keV flux from V861 Sco of (4 + or - 1) x 10 to the -13th erg /sq cm/sec was also obtained.
