High current electrical lead

An electrical lead has insulators imbedded in an inner conductor rod to form an annulus between the rod and a surrounding outer sheath. This annular space is filled with gas which conducts heat and prevents electrical leakage.

Development concept for a small, split-core, heat-pipe-cooled nuclear reactor

There have been two main deterrents to the development of semiportable nuclear reactors. One is the high development costs; the other is the inability to satisfy with assurance the questions of operational safety. This report shows how a split-core, heat-pipe cooled reactor could conceptually eliminate these deterrents, and examines and summarizes recent work on split-core, heat-pipe reactors. A concept for a small reactor that could be developed at a comparatively low cost is presented. The concept would extend the technology of subcritical radioisotope thermoelectric generators using 238 PuO2 to the evolution of critical space power reactors using 239 PuO2.

An evolutionary approach for a compact-split-core reactor.

An economical approach for advanced reactor power development is presented, and systems that result from the several stages of this plan are described. The development starts with a highly modularized heat-pipe, radioisotopic design and evolves into a low-specific-weight, high-performance reactor system.

Gettering capsule for removing oxygen from liquid lithium systems

Capsule consisting of tantalum shell lined with tantalum screen and partially filled with lithium and pieces of yttrium is immersed in hot lithium stream. Oxygen is removed from stream by being absorbed by gettering capsule. Oxygen passes through capsule wall and into lithium inside capsule where it reacts with yttrium to form Y2O3.

An evolutionary approach for a compact-split-core reactor

An economical approach for advanced reactor power development is presented, and systems that result from the several stages of this plan are described. The development starts with a highly modularized heat pipe, radioisotopic design and evolves into a low specific weight high performance reactor system.

Tungsten-reinforced tantalum

Method is described for producing tungsten-reinforced tantalum, a material possessing the high temperature strength of tungsten and room temperature ductility and weldability of tantalum. This material is produced by bonding together and overlaying structure of tungsten wires with chemical vapor deposited tantalum.

An out-of-core thermionic-converter system for nuclear space power.

Reexamination of designs of nuclear thermionic space power systems with the converter outside the reactor in the perspective of recent advances in heat-transfer methods, materials, converter performance, and radiation design. The 40- to 70-kW(e) power range is treated. The configuration is found to meet the constraints of readily available launch vehicles. It allows for off-design operation including startup, shutdown, and possible emergency conditions; provides tolerance of failure by extensive use of modular, redundant elements; incorporates and uses heat pipes in a fashion that reduces the need for extensive in-pile testing of system components; and uses thermionic converters, nuclear fuel elements, and heat-transfer devices in a geometrical form adapted from existing incore thermionic system designs.

An out-of-core thermionic-converter system for nuclear space power

Design of the nuclear thermionic space power system, 40 50 70 Kw(e) power range, are given. The design configuration (1) meets the constraints of readily available launch vehicles; (2) allows for off-design operation including startup, shutdown, and possible emergency conditions; (3) provides tolerance of failure by extensive use of modular, redundant elements; (4) incorporates and uses heat pipes in a fashion that reduces the need for extensive in-pile testing of system components; and (5) uses thermionic converters, nuclear fuel elements, and heat transfer devices in a geometrical form adapted from existing incore thermionic system designs. Designs and in some cases performance data for elements and groups of the elements of the system are included. Benefits of the highly modular system approach to reliability, safety, economy of development, and flexibility are discussed.

An out-of-core version of a six cell heat-pipe heated thermionic converter array

A thermionic system concept is described which incorporates a heat-pipe cooled fast spectrum reactor and six-cell thermionic converter modules located in the space radiator. Much of the technology being developed for the in-core thermionic reactor concept is directly applicable to this out-of-core concept, particularly the fuel and converter development activity. The major technology extension required is in the area of heat-pipes for cooling the reactor and carrying thermal energy from the reactor station to the converters. The performance characteristics of an out-of-core thermionic system at power levels between 40 and 70 kWe are summarized, the adaptation of in-core technology to the out-of-core concept is described and applicable heat-pipe technology programs now underway are discussed.

Load cell for thermionic converter tests

Stable, low duty cycle transistorized emitter follower load cell controls and absorbs large currents at low voltages. The use of energy storage in capacitors reduces auxiliary power source requirements. Low duty cycle pulse mode of operation reduces the average power handling requirement of all components.
