Compressor Station Differential Risk Assessment for Hydrogen and Natural Gas Blends

Blending hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines is a current initiative for large-scale hydrogen deployment in the United States. Understanding changes in hazards and risk for fuel blends can help inform regulations. A differential risk assessment was conducted to understand how the safety profile of fires and unignited flammable plumes of leaking fuel would change based on blend composition. The area affected by harmful heat fluxes from jet fires was found to be larger for blends with more natural gas in them, while the distance affected by unignited flammable fuel concentrations was found to be larger for blends with more hydrogen in them. Component leak frequencies and ignition probabilities greatly impact both heat flux risk and the flammable plume risk. The collection of additional blend-specific industry data could help understand which assumptions are most valid to make when calculating risk.

Uncertainty Quantification and Sensitivity Analysis for Quantitative Risk Assessments of Hydrogen Infrastructure

Typical QRAs provide deterministic estimates and understanding of risks posed but are constructed using significant assumptions and uncertainties due to limited data availability and historical momentum of using nominal estimates. This report presents a hydrogen QRA analysis using HyRAM+ that incorporates uncertainty with Latin hypercube sampling and sensitivity analysis using linear regression.

Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis Methods and Applications in the GDSA Framework (FY2024)

The Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology Campaign (SFWST) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) is conducting research and development on geologic disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level nuclear waste (HLW). Two priorities for SFWST are design concept development and disposal system modeling. These priorities are directly addressed in the Geologic Disposal Safety Assessment (GDSA) control account, which is charged with developing a geologic repository system modeling and analysis capability, and the associated software, GDSA Framework, for evaluating disposal system performance for nuclear waste in geologic media.

Topical Analyses Related to Co-located Industrial Facilities at Nuclear Power Plants

This report investigates topics of interest with regard to Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) utilizing flexible plant operations and generation (FPOG). Previous reports have identified the risk associated with co-located hydrogen generation facilities. This report evaluates special topics with regard to co-location of both hydrogen and syngas production facilities. A literature review was conducted to evaluate overpressure mitigation techniques that may be available to the NPP to reduce the consequence of an overpressure event. Also, the overpressure consequence of a catastrophic hydrogen storage tank failure event was analyzed. A comparison of the similarities and differences between the methodology utilized in HyRAM+ and Regulatory Guide 1.91 (R.G. 1.91) was performed for overpressure analysis. Also, the trinitrotoluene (TNT) equivalency methodology was utilized to evaluate an overpressure event at a Syngas production facility.
