Panel Session 98B: Treatment of Low-Activity Tank Waste at Hanford: Considering the Alternatives

This panel focused on alternative treatment of the Hanford Low-Activity Tank Waste. Currently, Tank Waste at the Hanford Site is to be separated into low-activity (LAW) and high-level waste (HLW) fractions, and then vitrified to produce immobilized LAW glass for onsite disposal, and HLW glass for ultimate geologic disposal. This panel discussed several commissioned studies by the National Laboratories, National Academies, and General Accountability Office to evaluate the risks, costs, and benefits associated with considering options for immobilizing portions of the Hanford LAW waste forms. Panelists with presentations: Analysis of Supplemental Treatment Approaches for Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation Overview and Conclusions (Michael Stone); Analysis of Supplemental Treatment Approaches for Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation: Disposal Performance Evaluation (Tom Brouns); National Academies Review of the Study on Supplemental Treatment Approaches of Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation (Charles Ferguson); GAO Observations on Immobilizing Low-Activity Waste at DoE's Hanford Site (David Trimble)

Session 078 - Panel: Start-Up of Three Major DOE Treatment Facilities -SWPF, IWTU and DFLAW (2/2) (R2.4)

This panel focused on the successes and challenges of the DOE High-Level radioactive tank waste management program, with an emphasis on the completion of construction and startup of three major treatment facilities - the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) at Savannah River, the Integrated Waste Treatment Unit (IWTU) at Idaho, and Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW) processing at Hanford. As a companion to Session 23, DOE managers and federal project directors discussed the status of facility startup efforts from a federal management and oversight perspective, highlighting readiness planning, challenges and lessons learned. Panelists with presentations: Transitioning Oversight: A Project Becomes an Operating Facility (James Folk); Tools for SU/C (Tom Fletcher); Startup and Commissioning -Integrate Waste Treatment Unit-Federal Perspective (Joel Case)

Panel Session 61: Challenges in the US DOE HLW Tank Management Program

Approximately 50 people attended this panel session which focused on the successes and challenges in DOE high-level radioactive tank waste management with special emphasis on tank waste processing and waste disposition. Panelists discussed approaches, results, and lessons learned in addressing challenges in construction, start-up, and processing of tank waste and its ultimate disposition that is critical to tank waste management at Hanford, Savannah River, and Idaho sites. Presentations proposed include: 1 - Liquid Waste Program at the Savannah River Site (James Folk, US DOE (USA)); 2 - Progress on Hanford's Tank Waste Treatment Mission (Tom Fletcher, US DOE (USA)); 3 - Idaho Tank Waste Program (Joel Case, US DOE (USA))
