Tuning the spontaneous exchange bias effect in La 1.5 Sr 0.5 CoMnO 6 with sintering temperature

Here, in this study, we present a study of the influence of microstructure on the magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of the La 1.5 Sr 0.5 CoMnO 6 double perovskite, with primary attention to the spontaneous exchange bias effect, a fascinating recently discovered phenomena for which some materials exhibit unidirectional magnetic anisotropy after being cooled in zero magnetic fields. By sintering La 1.5 Sr 0.5 CoMnO 6 at different temperatures, we obtained samples with distinct average grain sizes, ranging from 1.54-6.65 μm. A detailed investigation of the material's structural, morphologic, electronic, and magnetic properties using x-ray powder diffraction, powder neutron diffraction, x-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and ac and dc magnetometry has revealed a systematic enhancement of the exchange bias effect with increasing the average grain size. This evolution is discussed in terms of changes in the material's porosity and grain morphology and its influence on the exchange couplings at the magnetic interfaces.

The 1991 November 9 flare at 03.2 UT: Observations from Yohkoh

We discuss X-ray spectra and soft X-ray images of an M1.9 flare that occurred on 1991 November 9 near 03.2 UT. These data were obtained with instrumentation on the Japanese Yohkoh spacecraft. They cover the entire rise phase and peak flare emission, and the beginning of the decay phase. We determine the dynamics, temperature, and emission measure of the flare as inferred from the X-ray line profiles of resonance lines of Fe XXV, Ca XIX, and S XV. We discuss the morphology of the flare as inferred from the soft X-ray images. The November 9 flare is atypical in that a stronger than usual blueshifted emission component (relative to the stationary component) is observed for the resonance lines at flare onset. We discuss several methods for deconvolving the blueshifted component from the stationary component. The X-ray line profiles are consistent with predictions of numerical simulations of chromospheric evaporation. The X-ray images reveal a flare with a complicated loop geometry that is not fully understood. Many of the features in the images are moving upwards at speeds ranging from a few km/s to about 800 km/s. The blueshifted emission begins near the onset of hard X-ray emission, implying that particle acceleration and upflowing plasma have a common energy source.

Observation of transitions in lithiumlike germanium

Transitions of the type n = 2-2, n = 2-3 and n = 3-4 in Li-like Ge(29+) have been observed in the spectrum from a laser-produced plasma. The energy levels and ionization energy of Ge(29+) were derived from the observed wavelengths. The wavelength of the 2s 2S1/2-2p 2P3/2 transition is sufficiently accurate to determine the quantum-electrodynamic contribution to the transition energy.

Transitions in Fe-, Co-, Cu-, and Zn-like ions of W and Re

The spectra of highly ionized W and Re were observed by using laser-produced plasmas and a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. Transitions in Fe- through Zn-like ions were identified. Wavelengths in the range 7-75 A were measured with an uncertainty of + or - 0.015 A, and energy levels were derived from the measured wavelengths. The ionization limits of Cu-like W and Re were determined.

Absorption spectra of Fe I in the 1550-3215-A region

The high-dispersion absorption spectrum of Fe I is reported in the 1550-3215-A region. Included are wavelengths of about 3000 observed spectral features, improved spectral assignments, 248 new energy levels, and a value for the ionization potential of 63 737/cm obtained from extrapolation of Rydberg series. Improved wavelengths for several hundred V I and Ti I spectral lines determined on the same spectrograms as the iron data also are presented.

Grazing incidence technique to obtain spatially resolved spectra from laser heated plasmas

An experimental method is described in which a grazing incidence spectrograph is used to obtain spatially resolved spectra of laser heated plasmas in the 6-370-A region. In the experiment, small target spheres were irradiated by tightly focused laser beams. A tilted grazing incidence elliptical mirror placed 1.3 m from the target focuses the plasma radiation on the spectrograph slit at a distance of 0.7 m producing a useful degree of spatial resolution in the recorded spectral lines. The spectrum from a copper target is presented together with an X-ray pinhole camera image of the plasma.

Spectra and energy levels of Cu XXII, Cu XXIII, Cu XXIV, and Cu XXV

Transitions in highly ionized copper in the wavelength range 65-121 A have been identified in spectra recorded at the University of Rochester's 24-beam Omega laser facility. Wavelengths and energy levels are presented for oxygenlike Cu XXII, nitrogenlike Cu XXII, carbonlike Cu XXIV, and boronlike Cu XXV. The wavelengths of magnetic dipole transitions within the ground configurations are predicted from the energy levels.

Laser-produced spectra and QED effects for Fe-, Co-, Cu-, and Zn-like ions of Au, Pb, Bi, Th, and U

Spectra of very highly charged ions of Au, Pb, Bi, Th, and U have been observed in laser-produced plasmas generated by the OMEGA laser. Line identifications in the region 9-110 A were made for ions in the Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn isoelectronic sequences. Comparison of the measured wavelengths of the Cu-like ions with values calculated with and without QED corrections shows that the inclusion of QED corrections greatly improves the accuracy of the calculated 4s-4p wavelengths. However, significant differences between the observed and calculated values remain.

2s2 2p5-2s2p6 transitions in fluorinelike ions from Zr(31+) to Sn(41+)

Transitions of the type 2s2 2p5-2s2p6 have been observed in eight fluorinelike ions from Zr(31+) to Sn(41+). The spectra were produced by focusing light from the Nd:glass Omega laser at the University of Rochester onto solid targets and photographing the resultant plasmas with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. The identified transitions are in the region 24-60 A. The measured wavelengths are in good agreement with wavelengths calculated with the semiempirical formulas of Edlen (1983). Wavelengths for the 2s2 2p5 2P3/2-2P1/2 magnetic-dipole transitions are given for each ion.

Transitions of the type 2s-2p in oxygenlike Y, Zr, and Nb

Transitions of the type 2s-2p in the oxygenlike ions Y XXXII, Zr XXXIII, and Nb XXXIV were identified in spectra recorded at the University of Rochester's Omega laser facility. Solid targets were spherically irradiated by 24 beams of frequency-tripled (351-nm) Nd-glass laser radiation. The spectra were photographed with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. The identified transitions of the oxygenlike ions are in the range 30 to 73 A. The wavelengths for the magnetic-dipole transitions within the 2s2p4 ground configurations of these ions are predicted from the experimental energy levels.

Spectrum of sodiumlike selenium - Se XXIV

High-resolution spectra of Se XXIV have been obtained with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. Thin plastic foils coated with selenium were irradiated with four or eight beams of the OMEGA laser in a line-focus configuration. Spectrograms were obtained by viewing the plasma axially. Prominent in the spectra were the 3s-3p and 3p-3d transitions in the 150-240-A region and the transitions nl-(n + 1)l-prime with n = 3, 4 in the 24-80-A region. The energy levels and ionization limit derived from the measured wavelengths are also presented.

Evidence for gain on the C VI 182 A transition in a radiation-cooled selenium/Formvar plasma

Thin plastic foils coated with selenium have been irradiated using from 4 to 8 beams of the OMEGA laser in a line focus configuration. Spectra were recorded using a 3 meter spectrograph that viewed the plasma along the line focus. Based on a comparison of the intensities of the spectral lines from plasmas with lengths of 1.7, 3.4, 6.8, and 13.6 mm, the C VI n = 3 to 2 transition at 182 A was anomalously intense in the spectra from the longer plasmas. Calculations indicate that the carbon plasma was cooled by radiation from the highly-charged selenium plasma in a time that was smaller than the expansion time of the plasma. These plasma conditions are favorable for the occurrence of population inversions between the n = 2 and 3 levels of C VI resulting from recombination and cascading from higher levels. The measured gain coefficient for the C VI 182 A transition is 3/cm, and this corresponds to a gain-length product of 4 in the longest plasma.

Need for high resolution in VUV Rydberg state spectroscopy

The paper emphasizes the necessity of high energy resolution (resolving powers greater than 100,000) in VUV spectroscopic determinations of atomic and molecular Rydberg electronic structures. Attention is given to spectral observations of Rydberg levels in Ge I near the 4p 2P(0)1/2 limit, in Sr I near the 4d 2D3/2 limit, and in diatomic hydrogen halides (especially H I) below the X2Pi3/2 limit.

Measurements of spectrally integrated atmospheric transmittance in the O2 Schumann-Runge bands and derived oxygen column densities - 76-102 km

Atmospheric transmittances integrated over wavelength intervals corresponding approximately to the (15-0) through (4-0) Schumann-Runge bands of O2 have been determined from EUV solar spectra (wavelengths between 1768 and 1948 A) photographed at seven altitudes between 102 and 76 km with a rocket-borne spectrograph having a resolution of 0.07 A. The observed transmittances are compared with atmospheric transmittances predicted from three models of the O2 absorption cross section. The predicted transmittances have also been used to derive column densities of atmospheric O2 from the observations. The results are compared with values calculated from the U.S. Standard Atmosphere (1976) and with oxygen column densities determined by Prinz and Brueckner (1977) from EUV solar spectra of the Schumann-Runge continuum (wavelength below 1750 A) and of the H-Lyman alpha line (1216 A) recorded on the same films used in the present research. The comparisons test the utility of the models for studies of atmospheric photochemistry, suggest which models may be best for this purpose, and indicate how the models can be improved.

Absorption spectrum of Pb I between 1350 and 2041 A

The high resolution absorption spectrum of Pb I is reported between 1350 and 2041 A. Transitions are observed from the 6p2 (1/2,1/2)0, (3/2,1/2)1, and (3/2,1/2)2 levels to levels with J less than or equal to 2 associated with 6pns and 6pnd configurations. Energy levels have been determined with n(asterisk) values as high as 74. More than 500 spectral features and 370 odd parity energy levels are reported, a major part of which are new. These observations include five electric quadrupole transitions and 31 nuclear-spin-induced transitions from the Pb-207 isotope. Ionization limits of 59819.57 per cm and 73900.64 per cm have been determined for levels converging on the 6p 2P(1/2)O and 6p 2P(3/2)O levels of Pb II, respectively. An analysis of these data in terms of Lu-Fano graphical methods and multichannel quantum defect parametrization also is presented.
