Monitoring task loading with multivariate EEG measures during complex forms of human-computer interaction

Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings were made while 16 participants performed versions of a personal-computer-based flight simulation task of low, moderate, or high difficulty. As task difficulty increased, frontal midline theta EEG activity increased and alpha band activity decreased. A participant-specific function that combined multiple EEG features to create a single load index was derived from a sample of each participant's data and then applied to new test data from that participant. Index values were computed for every 4 s of task data. Across participants, mean task load index values increased systematically with increasing task difficulty and differed significantly between the different task versions. Actual or potential applications of this research include the use of multivariate EEG-based methods to monitor task loading during naturalistic computer-based work.

Measuring Rind Thickness on Polyurethane Foam

Nondestructive test determines rind thickness of polyurethane foam. Surface harness of foam measured by Shore durometer method: hardness on Shore D scale correlates well with rind thickness. Shore D hardness of 20, for example, indicates rind thickness of 0.04 inch (1 millimeter). New hardness test makes it easy to determine rind thickness of sample nondestructively and to adjust fabrication variables accordingly.

V/STOL propulsion control technology

Results of a NASA sponsored study of V/STOL Propulsion Control Analysis are presented. The study involved propulsion control requirements, design concepts and procedures, and control designs for supersonic V/STOL. A variable cycle engine with a remote augmented lift system was used as a basis for establishing typical operating requirements and control concepts, and a nonlinear engine model was developed for control development as a precursor to a real-time simulation capability. A simplified aircraft model was also used to investigate transition requirements, and a long-range technology plan was developed to define subsequent program requirements for achieving a real-time piloted simulation capability.

Feasibility study in the application of optical signal analysis to non-destructive testing of complex structures

Advantages of the large time bandwidth product of optical processing are presented. Experiments were performed to study the feasibility of the use of optical spectral analysis for detection of flaws in structural elements excited by random noise. Photographic and electronic methods of comparison of complex spectra were developed. Limitations were explored, and suggestions for further work are offered.

New reaction tester accurate within 56 microseconds

Testing device measures simple and disjunctive reaction time of human subject to light stimuli. Tester consists of reaction key, logic card, panel mounted neon indicators, and interconnecting wiring. Device is used for determining reaction times of patients undergoing postoperative neurological therapy.
