No-vent filling, boiloff, and other phenomena predicted. Cryogenic On-Orbit Liquid Analytical Tool (COOLANT) computer program developed to analyze thermodynamic processes required in maintaining and utilizing cryogen depot tank in microgravity environment. Code contains four major analysis modules, tank-geometry module, and data base of properties of fluids and other materials. COOLANT is modular, so algorithms and data bases upgraded and expanded as required. Written in FORTRAN 77.
An orbital cryogenic propellant storage facility will be required for a space-based Orbital Transfer Vehicle. The facility tanks will have features to permit fluid acquisition and transfer in low gravity and to limit cryogen boiloff caused by environmental heating. Boiloff management features will include thick multilayer insulation, vapor-cooled shields, low conductance structural supports and penetrations, and possibly refrigeration systems.
The first AMPTE artificial comet was observed with a low light level television camera operated aboard the NASA CV990 flying out of Moffett Field, California. The comet head, neutral cloud, and comet tail were all observed for four minutes with an unifiltered camera. Brief observations at T + 4 minutes through a 4554A Ba(+) filter confirmed the identification of the structures. The ion cloud expanded along with the neutral cloud at a rate of 2.3 km/sec (diameter) until it reached a final diameter of approx. 170 km at approx. T + 90 s. It also drifted with the neutral cloud until approx. 165 s. By T + 190 s it had reached a steady state velocity of 5.4 km/sec southward. A barium release in the magnetotail was observed from the CV990 in California, Eagle, Alaska, and Fairbanks, Alaska. Over a twenty-five minute period, the center of the barium streak drifted southward (approx. 500 m/sec), upward (24 km/sec) and eastward (approx 1 km/sec) in a nonrotating reference frame. An all-sky TV at Eagle showed a single auroral arc in the far North during this period.
Average high-latitude magnetic-field data from northern observatories are examined for three ranges of magnetic disturbance level, Kp = 1- to 1+, 2- to 3+ and greater than or equal to 4-. Except for 0 to 0800 hr MLT, 55 to 78 deg invariant latitude, during away interplanetary magnetic field sectors, the variations between season and sector have the same characteristics at all Kp ranges. Because the amplitude of sector differences is much larger at sunlit local times than in the midnight sector, it is concluded that the current system of Svalgaard (1973) is not adequate to describe the sector variations in magnetic disturbance. Other current systems are discussed briefly. The disturbance morphology and seasonal variation at all Kp levels confirms the results of previous studies which indicate that latitudinally broad current systems and nonionospheric sources are present in addition to latitudinally narrow electrojet currents.
Average high latitude magnetic field data from northern observatories are examined for three ranges of magnetic disturbance level, Kp = 1 minus to 1+,2 minus to 3+, and or = 4 minus. Except for 0-8h MLT, 55-78 deg invariant latitude, during away interplanetary magnetic field sectors, the variations between season and sector have the the same characteristics at all Kp ranges. The disturbance morphology and seasonal variation at all Kp levels confirms the results of previous studies which indicate that latitudinally broad current systems and non-ionospheric sources are present in addition to latitudinally narrow electrojet currents. Comparison of data between Kp levels indicates that the Harang discontinuity shifts toward earlier MLT with increasing Kp level.
