The Design and Usage of the New Data Management Features in NASTRAN

Two new data management features are installed in the April 1984 release of NASTRAN. These two features are the Rigid Format Data Base and the READFILE capability. The Rigid Format Data Base is stored on external files in card image format and can be easily maintained and expanded by the use of standard text editors. This data base provides the user and the NASTRAN maintenance contractor with an easy means for making changes to a Rigid Format or for generating new Rigid Formats without unnecessary compilations and link editing of NASTRAN. Each Rigid Format entry in the data base contains the Direct Matrix Abstraction Program (DMAP), along with the associated restart, DMAP sequence subset and substructure control flags. The READFILE capability allows an user to reference an external secondary file from the NASTRAN primary input file and to read data from this secondary file. There is no limit to the number of external secondary files that may be referenced and read.

COSMIC/NASTRAN on the Cray Computer Systems

COSMIC/NASTRAN was converted to the CRAY computer systems. The CRAY version is currently available and provides users with access to all of the machine independent source code of COSMIC/NASTRAN. Future releases of COSMIC/NASTRAN will be made available on the CRAY soon after they are released by COSMIC.

A new method for generating and maintaining rigid formats in NASTRAN

A new method for generating and updating Rigid Formats in NASTRAN is discussed. The heart of this method is a Rigid Format data base that is in card-image format and that can therefore be easily maintained by the use of standard text editors. Each Rigid Format entry in this data base will contain the Direct Matrix Abstraction Program (DMAP) for that Rigid Format along with the related restart, subset and substructure control tables. NASTRAN will read this data base directly in every NASTRAN run and perform the necessary transformations to allow the DMAP to be processed and compiled by the NASTRAN executive. This approach will permit Rigid Formats to be changed without unnecessary compilations and relinking of NASTRAN. Furthermore, this approach will also make it very easy for users to make permanent changes to existing Rigid Formats as well as to generate their own Rigid Formats. This new method will be incorporated in a future release of the public version of NASTRAN.

NASTRAN of the HEP

Preliminary plans for the conversion of NASTRAN to DENELCOR's heterogeneous element processor (HEP) are presented. First, a brief history of computer architecture and the architecture of the HEP computer system are discussed. Second, a description of the HEP computer system is provided. Lastly, the preliminary NASTRAN conversion plans for link management, I/O management, memory management, and code optimization are discussed.

NASTRAN general purpose interface requirements document

This NASTRAN (NASA STRuctural ANalysis) General Purpose Interface Requirements Document (IRD) defines standards for deliverables required of New Capability Contractors (NCCs) and relates these deliverables to the software development cycle. It also defines standards to be followed by NCCs for adding to and modifying the code in the NASTRAN software system and for adding to and modifying the four official NASTRAN manuals: The NASTRAN Theoretical Manual, the NASTRAN User's Manual, The NASTRAN Programmer's Manual, and The NASTRAN Demonstration Problem Manual. It is intended that this General Purpose IRD shall be incorporated by reference in all contracts for a new NASTRAN capability.

Study of the NASTRAN input/output systems

The basic characteristics of the NASTRAN level 16 I/O subsystem are presented with particular reference to blocking/deblocking aspects, I/O methods used on the IBM, CDC, and UNIVAC machines, definition of basic NASTRAN I/O control tables, and portability of parts of the I/O subsystem to other programs outside the NASTRAN environment are included. An explanation of the IBM primary, secondary, and tertiary files defined by the data definition (DD) cards in the NASTRAN JCL procedure. The explanation is intended to enlighten users as to the purpose of these DD cards, how they relate to one another, and why there are no similar type definition cards required on the CDC and UNIVAC versions. Enhancements designed to increase overall efficiency and decrease core requirements are also recommended.

A condensed form of NASTRAN

The Interactive Graphics Finite Element System, IGFES, is described along with its supporting analysis software, graphics terminal support package and hardware configurations. IGFES provides an interactive design tool for structural engineers via pre- and postprocessing of finite element data. The system currently runs on an IBM 360/44 OS-MFT system or a PDP 11/40 DOS/BATCH system. Graphics devices are supported using an inhouse developed, device independent terminal support package. Support is available for the Calcomp 563 drum plotter, Tektronix 4002A storage display terminal and the Lundy Electronics 20 inch standalone refresh display system. IGFES and its associated systems are written in FORTRAN IV.

On eigenvectors of multiple eigenvalues obtained in NASTRAN

In the case of nonmultiple eigenvalues, each of the three real eigenvalue extraction methods available in NASTRAN will, for a given type of normalization, give essentially the same eigenvectors, but this is not so in the case of multiple eigenvalues. This discrepancy is explained and illustrated by considering the example of a NASTRAN demonstration problem that has both multiple and nonmultiple eigenvalues.
