Techno-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen Production and Compressed Air Energy Storage from Variable Renewable Energy

Examines the performance and cost of pairing variable renewable energy (VRE) sources with compressed air energy storage and hydrogen production through PEM electrolysis. Sensitivities were performed on H2 cost, PEM electrolyzer capital cost, and hydrogen cavern capital cost. The analysis shows that the cost of VRE has the most impact on the overall cost results.

Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plants with Carbon Capture and Exhaust Gas Recycle

This is a presentation given at the 3rd International Conference on Energy and Environment. The presentation highlights analysis work conducted by NETL to assess the cost and performance for natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plants that incorporate solvent-based post combustion carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and exhaust gas recycle (EGR). Increasing the inlet CO2 concentration by EGR is expected to improve the efficiency of the capture system and reduce its cost, however the analysis results show that the cost improvement is minimal as is the cost of capture reduction.

Techno-Economic Analysis of Large-Scale Hydrogen Production from Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell Systems

The objective of this study is to establish a detailed techno-economic analysis to assess the effectiveness of incremental technology improvements needed for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology to achieve the U.S. DOE’s Hydrogen Shot goal of hydrogen production at less than $1 per kilogram. The pathway considers incremental technology improvements to key system parameters, with system performance and cost assessed for each pathway step. Briefly, the steps include cell voltage degradation rate improvements, operational current density increases, operating temperature reduction, improved steam utilization, increased system capacity factor, and reduced cell/stack capital costs. Each step is assessed at both atmospheric and pressurized (8 bar) operating conditions. To supplement assessment at each of these discrete stepwise improvements, sensitivity studies are conducted to understand the relative impact of each parameter and identify avenues for additional cost reductions. System efficiency and levelized costs of hydrogen (LCOH) for each case are presented. For the end-of-pathway case, which includes all the incremental research and development improvements, the cost of hydrogen produced is reduced by 50 percent from the state-of-the-art case.

Pathway Study for Large-Scale Hydrogen Production from Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell Technology

This poster was presented at the 2024 FECM/NETL Spring R&D Project Review Meeting. This data is a summary of a project involving large-scale hydrogen production via SOEC technology to identify a technology pathway to achieve the $1/kg hydrogen goal. The poster lays out the identified pathway and technology changes, assumptions, systems, cost results, and sensitivities along with discussion points.
