Implications of new Reasoning Capabilities for Science and Security: Results from a Quick Initial Study

On Thursday, September 12 OpenAI released “a new series of models designed to spend more time thinking… they can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and math.” These models are referred to as o1-preview and o1-mini and appear to be first results of what had been a closely held project called Strawberry within OpenAI. The models are not described as successors in the earlier GPT series because they provide a qualitatively different type of capability, especially step-by-step reasoning.

Maximum likelihood estimation of difference scaling functions for suprathreshold judgments

Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) has been used to produce perceptual scales from binary judgments of triads and quadruples. This method relies on Thurstone’s theory of a stochastic perceptual process where the perceived difference of two stimuli is the difference in their perceived strengths. It is possible that the perception of a suprathreshold difference is overestimated when adding smaller differences, a phenomenon referred to as diminishing returns. The current approach to construct a perceptual scale using MLE does not account for this phenomenon. We present a way to model the perception of differences using MLE and Thurstone’s theory, adapted to allow the possibility of diminishing returns. This method is validated using Monte Carlo simulated responses to experimental triads and can correctly model diminishing returns, the absence of diminishing returns, and the opposite of diminishing returns both in the cases when a perceptual scale is known and when the true perceived strengths of the stimuli are unknown. Additionally, this method was applied to empirical data sets to determine its feasibility in investigations of perception. Ultimately, it was found that this analysis allows for more accurate modeling of suprathreshold difference judgments, a more complete understanding of the perceptual processes underlying comparisons, and the evaluation of Thurstone’s theory of difference judgments.

Systematic Generation of Moment Invariant Bases for 2D and 3D Tensor Fields

Moment invariants have been successfully applied to pattern detection tasks in 2D and 3D scalar, vector, and matrix valued data. However so far no flexible basis of invariants exists, i.e., no set that is optimal in the sense that it is complete and independent for every input pattern. Here, we prove that a basis of moment invariants can be generated that consists of tensor contractions of not more than two different moment tensors each under the conjecture of the set of all possible tensor contractions to be complete. This result allows us to derive the first generator algorithm that produces flexible bases of moment invariants with respect to orthogonal transformations by selecting a single non-zero moment to pair with all others in these two-factor products. Since at least one non-zero moment can be found in every non-zero pattern, this approach always generates a complete set of descriptors.
