Dynamics and transport in the boundary-driven dissipative Klein-Gordon chain

Motivated by experiments on chains of superconducting qubits, we consider the dynamics of a classical Klein-Gordon chain coupled to coherent driving and subject to dissipation solely at its boundaries. As the strength of the boundary driving is increased, this minimal classical model recovers the main features of the "dissipative phase transition" seen experimentally. Between the transmitting and non-transmitting regimes on either side of this transition (which support ballistic and diffusive energy transport respectively), we observe additional dynamical regimes of interest. These include a regime of superdiffusive energy transport at weaker driving strengths, together with a "dissipative breather crystal" regime at stronger driving strengths, which is characterized by emergent translation symmetry, ballistic energy transport, and coherent oscillations of a nonlinear normal mode. Here, we propose a non-local Lyapunov exponent as an experimentally measurable diagnostic of many-body chaos in this system, and more generally in open systems that are only coupled to an environment at their boundaries.

Hydrodynamics of quantum spin liquids

Quantum spin liquids are topological states of matter that arise in frustrated quantum magnets at low temperatures. At low energies, such states exhibit emergent gauge fields and fractionalized quasiparticles and can also possess enhanced global symmetries compared to their parent microscopic Hamiltonians. Here we study the consequences of this emergent gauge and symmetry structure for the hydrodynamics of quantum spin liquids. Specifically, we analyze two cases, the U(1) spin liquid with a Fermi surface and the SU(4)-symmetric “algebraic” spin liquid. We show that the emergent degrees of freedom in the spin liquid phase lead to a variety of additional hydrodynamic modes compared to the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. We identify a hydrodynamic regime for the internal U(1) gauge field common to both states, characterized by slow diffusion of the internal transverse photon.

Superdiffusive transport of energy in one-dimensional metals

Metals in one spatial dimension are described at the lowest energy scales by the Luttinger liquid theory. It is well understood that this free theory, and even interacting integrable models, can support ballistic transport of conserved quantities including energy. In contrast, realistic one-dimensional metals, even without disorder, contain integrability-breaking interactions that are expected to lead to thermalization and conventional diffusive linear response. We argue that the expansion of energy when such a nonintegrable Luttinger liquid is locally heated above its ground state shows superdiffusive behavior (i.e., spreading of energy that is intermediate between diffusion and ballistic propagation), by combining an analytical anomalous diffusion model with numerical matrix-product–state calculations on a specific perturbed spinless fermion chain. Different metals will have different scaling exponents and shapes in their energy spreading, but the superdiffusive behavior is stable and should be visible in time-resolved experiments.
