Integrated Technology for Cost-Effective CO2 Capture and Formic Acid Production: Modeling, Optimization, and Economic Analysis

A novel reactive technology is being investigated that electrochemically converts CO2 into valuable chemicals, particularly formic acid. This work focuses on identifying the optimal design and operation of an integrated membrane-based CO2 capture unit with the electrochemical conversion process. In this setup, the CO2 in the flue gas permeates through a CO2-selective membrane and enters an electrolyzer to produce formic acid, creating an integrated reaction module. To refine the chemical product, gas products from the electrolyzer are directed to a pressure swing adsorption unit, while the liquid product undergoes refinement to achieve commercial-grade formic acid using reactive distillation. A membrane CO2 capture model and an electrochemical conversion model have been developed using the IDAES Integrated Platform (Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy System), facilitating rigorous flowsheet modeling and process design and optimization.

Flexible Technoeconomic Analysis Tools for Evaluating Emerging Power Generation Technologies in Hourly Electricity Markets using IDAES and Pyomo

Conference presentation leveraging the recently developed “price-taker class”. We use the tool to develop and showcase workflows that enable rapid technology evaluation for power generation technologies. This work shows a reimplementation of previous results that were conducted outside the price-taker class framework, indicating this workflow is indeed streamlining emerging technology analysis.

Optimization Model and Algorithm for Capacity Planning and Operation of Reliable and Carbon-neutral Power Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Generation

In this work, we propose a Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) model that optimizes both long-term capacity planning (such as the number and size of dispatchable/renewable generators, batteries, and transmission lines) and hourly operation (such as on/off schedules of dispatchable generators, power output from each generator, and power flow) to maximize power system reliability while minimizing total cost and CO2 emissions.

Multi-scale Modeling Using IDAES

This presentation was delivered at the 2023 FECM / NETL Spring R&D Project Review Meeting. It demonstrated how the IDAES platform is enabling unique analyses across multiple scales. Focus areas included solid oxide fuel cell/solid oxide electrolysis cell-based integrated energy systems with the flexibility to produce both hydrogen and electricity as well as long term expansion planning of future decarbonized electricity grids.

Status Update on NETL Techno-Economic Analysis of Solid Oxide Cells

This is a presentation delivered at the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Project Review Meeting portion of the 2023 FECM / NETL Spring R&D Project Review Meeting on April 19, 2023. The presentation highlights recently completed techno-economic analysis of solid oxide cell systems including a brief overview of pairing SOFC technology with energy storage, an analysis of the tradeoffs associated with reversible SOC technology versus paired SOFC/SOEC, and highlights of the recently released NGFC and IGFC pathway studies. A more detailed description of analysis conducted on hydrogen fueled SOFC systems is also included.

Technoeconomic Evaluation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Hydrogen-Electricity Co-Generation Concepts

This report evaluates the cost and performance of several types of Integrated Energy Systems (IES) based on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to generate power and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) to produce hydrogen. All cases feature carbon capture at rates exceeding 97 percent. The report also describes the development of optimized steady state process models for each system. These are used to calculate overall electricity and hydrogen production costs using a consistent methodology that facilitates comparisons of these cases to one another and to prior NETL cost and performance estimates. The SOFC and SOEC costs and performance are based on nth-of-a-kind systems and include research and development and learning associated with mass-scale commercial deployment of the technology over the next decade required for commercial utility-scale systems.

A complementarity-based vapor-liquid equilibrium formulation for equation-oriented simulation and optimization

Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) is a cornerstone of computer aided process engineering (CAPE). Embedded within process system models, VLE calculations are inherently procedural with non-smooth behavior that frequently require discrete decisions. Traditionally, these features resist the incorporation of VLE within efficient, large-scale equation-oriented (EO) process simulation and optimization strategies. On the other hand, recent reformulation of VLE models through the incorporation of complementarity constraints has broadened its scope to deal seamlessly with phase transitions and even supercritical excursions in process simulation and optimization. In this study, we extend these VLE complementarity models to EO frameworks where procedural thermodynamic property libraries are still required. Here, we develop an efficient, non-intrusive, and intuitive “square-flash” equation system that has been implemented within the IDAES Integrated Platform (IDAES-IP). Further, the effectiveness of this modular approach is demonstrated on case studies for non-ideal flash calculations and distillation optimization with disappearing phases and supercritical transitions.
