Solar concentrating properties of truncated hexagonal, pyramidal and circular cones

The solar concentrating properties of specularly reflecting truncated pyramidal, hexagonal, and circular cones are evaluated. Pyramidal and hexagonal configurations are discussed with reference to the concentration factor as a function of half apex angle and the length of the side over the width, and to the irradiance distribution. Expressions are derived for the concentration factor and the irradiance at the base of a circular cone when the sunlight is incident normal to the aperture and for oblique incidence.

Flat-sided rectilinear trough as a solar concentrator - An analytical study

Formulas are derived for the concentration factor and irradiance distribution at the base of the flat-sided linear trough. Performance is affected by the number of reflections the solar rays undergo before reaching the base, the cone apex angle, and the coefficient of reflection. Results are presented graphically in such a way that one can choose the optimum configuration, which is the minimum material required, to achieve a given concentration factor. Practical concentration factors range from 1.5 to 4 depending on the geometry and coefficient of reflection.

Improved source of infrared radiation for spectroscopy

Radiation from a crimped V-groove in the electrically heated metallic element of a high-resolution infrared spectrometer is more intense than that from plane areas adjacent to the element. Radiation from the vee and the flat was compared by alternately focusing on the entrance slit of a spectrograph.
